I'm not sure people in the US quite understand how horrible things are in major cities in India right now. All of us have friends, family, PhD advisees, etc who are desperately seeking medical attention for themselves/family. Shortage of hospital beds, oxygen, meds; heartbreaking
There had been warning signs since February. But caught up in triumphalism, hubris, mixed messaging and claims about exceptionalism, India let its guard down. Now it is in the throes of a public health emergency. My piece. #Covid19#India#secondwavebbc.in/3x82ktp
Some news: I have joined the Board of Reviewing Editors (BoRE) at Science. Part of the remit is to encourage more high-quality economics submissions. So here’s a long-ish thread on why, what, and how you should submit to Science, as well as details on the editorial process 1/n
As the great @Key_Z_E would say: Econometrics! Wut?! Econometrica!! Econometrics! Wut?! Econometrica!!
It's been 12 years since we started this paper; the amazing journey w/ @karthik_econ, @PaulFNiehaus, & all who worked with us has been reward itself...
Assorted reflections from a year of co-editing @JPubEcon
1/ Econ as a field venerates superstars, but there are *a lot* of good economists writing good papers everywhere! They may not be household names or #econtwitter stars, but that does not make their work any less meaningful
R4, whoever and wherever you are, know that I will forever cherish (and may even frame) the opening sentence of your review: "This paper is an extraordinary piece of scholarship on a topic of great global importance"
My Official Annual (ok, first) Rankings of Econ Phd rec letter submission systems. Demerits awarded for i) forcing me to create an account ii) making me type out redundant information iii) making me rank candidate in useless categories iv) making me click through multiple screens
It’s time for my Highly Anticipated (ok, not) Annual (ok, 2nd ever) Rankings of Econ Phd rec letter submission systems. Movement in both directions this year, + new entrants. Notable awards– Biggest improvement: Michigan. Worst new entrants: UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, & Princeton
View from the new @JPAL_SA Mumbai office! Not quite as grand inside, just a single room with a couple of desks, but can other @JPAL offices match this view?
Could I have picked a worse year to start as @JPubEcon coeditor? Probably not. Could you as reviewer help make this easier? Why yes you can - by simply responding to my review request! It's fine if you can't do the review, just let me know quickly!! 1/n
Back by popular demand**, here is the 4th Annual Rankings of Econ/related Phd rec letter submission systems. Slightly more systematic and less subjective than ever. Also, annoyingly, most ever schools in the F*** U category!
My favorite Maharashtrian comfort food is featured by @nytimes and that too by the amazing @CiaoSamin! Recipe is mostly right (even the microwave trick!), although you need green chiles for sure and go easy on the ginger ;) cc: @gchiplunkar@CafeEconomics
My @UVAEcon colleague Sheetal Sekhri's fantastic work on signaling value of elite Indian colleges featured by @TheEconomist! She's not on Twitter so I get to do some guilt-free bragging on her behalf...
On way to India after nearly 2 years, longest I’ve ever been away! Feeling same mix of anticipation and anxiety that I felt leaving India at 16 to study in Canada… Many hoops to jump thru before I get there so fingers crossed all goes smoothly
