🧵:Today marks 50 years since Idi Amin publicly condemned Ugandan Asians as the enemy, enforcing a brutal policy in which they had 90 days to leave the country. At least 70,000 S.Asians left, including my mum, her 8 siblings, their parents, her SIL & her 4 nieces and nephews.

I have never in my 32 years heard the word p*ki used against brown folk so casually, so callously, so ubiquitously. One off instances, yes. But day after day after day? My parents had stories like these. It seems now we do too.

This is Marian, Rami + their baby, Kylie. They are sheltering at St Porphyrius Church in Gaza - one of the oldest churches in the world. They may look happy in but do you see the wreckage behind them? It's a visceral reminder of the ongoing war they are living through. 1/

🧵If you walk through the cobbled alleys of occupied East Jerusalem's Muslim quarter, you will come across a community of Afro-Palestinians whose recent history is closely linked to al-Aqsa Mosque - the third holiest site in Islam.

On 19th October, the church grounds were hit in an Israeli airstrike. Marian’s brother-in-law was one of 18 killed. Many more were injured. She says he died saving his son’s life as he shielded him from a collapsing wall. It was an immediate death.
