Am now mostly off to Bluesky — don’t have time for both places and the chat over there seems more useful than here.

    Britain 2020. In a nutshell.

NEW: The inside story of the Ventilator Challenge - the muddled thinking, the wasted time the political egoism. It's a mad tale. Stay with me. Me with my superb @FT colleague @Michael_Pooler 1/Thread

One thing the Cummings row does is distract from this crushing Sunday Times review into @BorisJohnson failure to get on top of #coronavirus in March. And the lives that cost. It’s long and behind paywalls, but some key nuggets../1

No plugs. No tables and, most of time, no WiFi. This is a Thameslink train. It serves as main link between London and Brighton/Cambridge. Prime commuter line. 000s of wasted hours. It’s like the UK is *built* for low-productivity. The worst kind of penny-pinching procurement.

This really is extraordinary. I didn’t believe it til I heard the clip. Choosing freedom from Brussels via #brexit is directly equated with the people of #Ukriane choosing freedom from Russian invasion. 🤯
Words fail me that this loathsome man actually just compared the Ukrainian people's current quest for freedom to the UK voting for Brexit Just when you thought he couldn't sink to new depths 👇

What worries me is if this 'how hard can it be?' principle is applied to testing, to PPE procurement etc. The government needs to show some HUMILITY. It needs to LISTEN TO PEOPLE WHO KNOW STUFF. I think this is a clear example of where it did not. ENDS Good weekend all.

Pitiful tweet. NO country in the world has internalised the lessons of Naziism/Fascism/20th century like Germany.
Must have been an "awkward" moment for Angela Merkel to sit in ceremony as the Allies commemorated D-Day that broke the back of Nazi Germany.

Can we squash this tiresome trope that teachers don't want schools to open? Or that arguments for closing schools are somehow preserve of liberal/wet child-eating commies....this is about hard choices as the #COVID19 is running out of control (R above 1) /1

Even if @BorisJohnson wasn’t warned about the party, surely, when he sees his garden full of folk, he says: “What on earth is going on? You know the rules. You wrote them. I broadcast them. Go home. Get back to work. Who the hell organised this?” But that isn’t what happened.

Bookmark this tweet. It's not "The Guardian" that is worried about the dangers of not having full checks on EU food imports after #Brexit, it's the flipping Food Standards Agency...and the British Veterinary Association, the National Pig Association, the National Farmers' Union/1

So. @BorisJohnson is out. The politicians who did most to deliver #Brexit, both in 2016 and 2019. I've read lots of the political obits, but my takeaway isn't about his charisma & bonhomie etc, it's about how Brexit required a chronic state of dishonesty to set in... /1

SO after furious complaint about @michaelgove refusing #Brexit extension, the Scottish and Welsh govts of @NicolaSturgeon and @fmwales Mark Drakeford refuse to take part in consultation ahead of @BorisJohnson meeting on Monday. Message: this will be an ENGLISH, TORY #Brexit.
