    I got this media inquiry yesterday from the Daily Caller Foundation. It’s both a) funny & b) a great look at how bad faith media works. A vague email like this means a smear; it’s sent solely so that they can write “x did not respond to a request for comment” So I responded

    As Zuck prattles on in revisionist blog posts about how he intended FB to “Give people a voice”, he consistently misses this point: harassment of this sort *silences* voices. It deters counterspeech to terrible ideas by making the reputational, time, and sanity cost too high...

    Instead, ad hoc groups of *volunteers* - in this case, other pediatricians! - took shifts moderating Dr. Baldwin’s social profiles, reporting fake reviews. They deleted and banned ~5000 people (and kept a spreadsheet of the ones on FB).

    Users who have better things to do, important work to do, wasting hours of their time to manage what platforms won’t...to handle predictable, well-documented, repetitive harassment behavior. It’s embarrassing for FB at this point how bad their user-controlled moderation tools are

    Flying monkeys engaging in coordinated brigading to harass and silence people is a problem that Facebook has downplayed and avoided handling for years and years. They pay lip service to “better moderation tools” in bad press cycles, but have delivered nothing remotely adequate.

    Bronson is young. It’s hard to get a job doing reputable journalism that pays. He needs to get that bag; I get it. But this is how the sausage is made. Recognize these kinds of articles as chum - they are evasive; lie; and one cites the next & launders the lie in perpetuity.

    and that’s why the flying monkeys do it. When it's clear that the cost of producing a cute public health PSA is abuse, death threats, and attempts to tank your livelihood, what đŸ‘©â€âš•ïž or 👹‍🔬 really wants to bother?
