San Francisco must not regress to the inhumane, cruel, and costly war on drugs. Let’s remember that the war on drugs, which began under Richard Nixon in the 1970s, did nothing to reduce drug use or sales. Nor was that its intended purpose. 1/

Today over a dozen of the most courageous and innovative attorneys in the DA's office were let go. These are leaders of criminal justice initiatives, such as the innocence commission, police accountability, and juvenile justice reform. My gratitude for the impact you have made.

The militarized police response to a youth-led skateboarding event was a tremendous overreach that escalated tensions, endangered young people and onlookers, and violated people’s rights. Here’s my full statement 7/10/23.

Urging @GavinNewsom to reconsider a proposed budget that would slash $50M from public defenders. This would gut a successful re-sentencing pilot program that has freed people who were eligible for release because of new sentencing laws. 1/

We recognize that the Mayor & many of our elected leaders feel pressured to address issues that have been amplified in the press, but the Mayor’s proposal to massively expand police presence in SF is regressive & harmful to those who are already underserved &overpoliced. 1/

My office is releasing videos of SFPD brutalizing our client after an accidental collision in 2018. The remaining charges against our client have now been dropped. This is a cautionary tale about police reports covering up police violence. @sfdefender sfpublicdefender.org/news/2021/12/c…

Immigrants being held in detention are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases, like coronanvirus, due to congregate sleeping & notably poor sanitation & medical care. Today, I called on ICE to release ppl from Yuba Co. & Mesa Verde for the benefit of public health.

Great news! Governor @GavinNewsom has signed our bill to pilot the first-of-its-kind program to pay higher compensation to low-income jurors, starting in the new year. “Be the Jury” aims to diversify juries and thereby enhance justice for our clients. 1/

We cannot arrest, prosecute, and cage our way out of a public health crisis. Every dollar spent on this misguided strategy is a dollar lost. We must instead invest in public health solutions that have proven to be effective, including housing, jobs, healthcare, and education. 3/

Rather, the drug war was designed as an attack on the poor and people of color that fueled criminalization and mass incarceration of vulnerable communities for decades. At that, it was enormously successful and harmful. 2/

The conditions inside ICE detention centers are shocking, and so is the fact that ICE refuses to tell the truth about it. The public health crisis taking place inside these centers is precisely why my office is suing ICE.

Today, thanks to my fierce team of defenders, only 13 children remain in SF’s juvenile hall. It’s an all-time low, but together w/ JPD & the court we must go further & release more children. In this pandemic, it’s unacceptable to hold children in cells w/o schooling/programming.

Rarely do police officers across the nation face criminal charges for on-duty violence, and San Francisco is no exception. - thread -
