Advice for scholars: next time you lecture on Kant and revolutions at “Downing” (@DarwinCollege) Cambridge, make sure your hair is neatly tied and that you’re not blonde. Or else your research impact will be on the @spectator libido section.

If you’ve never seen a UK visa rejection letter -the cruelty, the contempt, the humiliation-here’s the one denying entrance to my mum BECAUSE I’d said in my invitation letter that I was pregnant & needed help. I’m a privileged academic. Imagine what it’s like for other Albanians

The idea that unauthorised “Albanian males” (is that a new human species?) coming to the UK can “easily” get a visa is a joke. I’ve been in the UK 14 years & my brother has never visited, not once. He doesn’t know where I live, he has never seen my kids school. Why? 1/5

Rosa Luxemburg is now in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy! I wrote the entry and it covers (or tries to cover) everything: the accumulation of capital, reform and revolution, imperialism, self determination, feminism & more. Check it out here: plato.stanford.edu/entries/luxemb…

I can never walk past a KFC without thinking of my mum’s first time in NYC: Weren’t the Americans fighting against the People’s Army of Vietnam, she suddenly asked. Sure, I said. “Then why do they have these photos of Ho Chi Minh everywhere?”

that my mother (a 70 year old ‘Albanian female’) had not “satisfied the consular office that her intentions are those of a genuine visitor”. Ask any Albanian you meet and they will have at least one story like this. It’s very likely they will have more. 5/5

he knows (as we all do) that if you are a “young Albanian male” you are almost certain to be rejected. I wonder how much money the UK makes every year out of rejected visa applications? 3/5

4yo: Mummy, do you worry about death too? - Yes, sometimes. 4yo: Well, you don’t have to. We WILL bury you, and you won’t feel anything.
