    Guys. Plastic is the perfect material for straws. Paper disintegrates. Metal doesn’t bend in to assist with the suck. American trash is basically not what ends up in the Ocean (mostly from 3rd world rivers). And straws are not a large percentage of single-use plastic trash.

    If the objection was the scope of her research was not PhD-worthy, that really should have been noticed earlier. I didn’t read that she failed at her research— the scope is something that should have been clear at the time the proposal was approved.

    The success of DALLE 2 and Stable Diffusion has freed me up to enjoy art again in a simple way that is centered around viewer experience instead of narcissistic expression of the artist or a focus on the technical or conceptual difficulty of making the piece.

    It makes me extremely angry when people think they should have the right to be insulated from children in public spaces. Like the world is for powerful adults only and developing kids with all their nEeDs should be hidden away. I never forgot what it was like to be a child.

    Western Buddhism tends to be more of a bag of wellness tricks than a religion, but it’s worth sharing that Nietzsche was right-- Buddhism proper is anti-life. It came out of a Hindu obsession with ending the cycle of reincarnation. Nirvana means “cessation.”

    I'm very saddened to have watched my friends of, in some cases, 10+ years, go from ambitiously trying to protect and improve the world to becoming toadies for supervillains, grasping for the crumbs they drop as they imperil the world.

    I am so, so sad today. Some days the weight of it all just hits me. I want to live my life with my boyfriend. I want us to have kids. I want love and a full life for everyone. Some days the possibility that that will all be taken away is so palpable, and grief is heavy.
