Can I add to this list? How about: 3. Say something kind about a colleague’s or student’s paper before offering your criticism. Everyone needs some encouragement in this hyper-competitive profession.
Like many of you, still struggling to cope with the death of Emmanuel Farhi. Today I met a group of graduate students I am advising and decided to share some of my feelings. It was hard. 1/4

The very definition of a student-athlete. Honors student in economics. Wrote a terrific senior thesis on the value of diversity in NBA front offices. And what a basketball player who will only get better. Suddenly, I'm a Detroit Piston fan!
    DREAMS TO REALITY. @Tosan_Evb signs with the Detroit Pistons! 🔗: bit.ly/3NIPMTH #MakeShots 🐯🏀 | #Pistons

Celebrating the publication of Dixit and Norman. 😀

I am so sorry to hear that Victor Norman passed away. His unpublished, handwritten 1976 paper on “new trade theory” was a gem. His book with Avinash Dixit is still on my reading list 40+ years on. Also, a really nice guy. RIP Victor.

My working paper with @ezrao surveys the voluminous literature on the declining labor share. We highlight pitfalls in the literature and explain why the phenomenon is "explained" many times over. The Elusive Explanation for the Declining Labor Share

Peter was unique. He was serious and ambitious, but humble and gracious. He never tried to get ahead at the expense of others. He was fast to provide a complement and to answer an email asking him to share his expertise. Today I’ve lost a source of inspiration and a dear friend.
Very sorry to hear that Peter Neary lost his battle with cancer today. A giant in the international trade is gone. I will sorely miss him. RIP.

Bob was a great teacher and a great mentor. And served on my wife’s thesis committee. Always supportive of my work on endogenous growth. Thanks, Bob, we’ll miss you.
RIP. Bob Solow an absolute giant in Economics, has passed away at age 99. Tremendously influential in the profession and one of the key founders of the MIT Economics department as we live it today. Will be sorely missed.

Could we stop calling it "openness"? The ratio of trade to GDP is determined mostly by country size, not by policies. Macroeconomic conditions also affect this ratio. This graph suggests that the US has higher trade barriers than the average country, which simply isn't true.
    Replying to @PIIE
Once seen as a force driving increased global trade openness, the United States is now lagging behind international trade expansion, more so since 2000.

Fascinating project by @S_Stantcheva on how people understand, reason about, and learn about economic policies, including trade policy. Recommend to all my trade colleagues, who might not otherwise notice it.

And how about 4. Think about the person at the other end of that referee’s report who has slaved over the paper you are tearing apart.
