RIP. Indeed, an absolute giant. I saw him many times at MIT, but I never had the courage to approach him and tell him how much I admired his work. A few years ago, I was shocked to receive detailed comments on an old paper of mine he had somehow come across... (1/2)
RIP. Bob Solow an absolute giant in Economics, has passed away at age 99. Tremendously influential in the profession and one of the key founders of the MIT Economics department as we live it today. Will be sorely missed.

For some time, I've been worrying that a return to normality would take much longer than many expect. Now I know that things will never go back to normal. My friend and intellectual hero, with whom I shared an office wall, is gone. No words can express my sorrow. RIP Emmanuel.

1/ 📢 New paper alert! 📄 Together with Vitalii Tubdenov, we propose a measure of the "Average Period of Production" (APP) to capture the temporal dimension of production processes. It is inspired by Böhm-Bawerk’s capital theory.

I am still finalizing my slides, and will share them after my lecture, but let me give you two cents on what I will speak about. I am honored to be a trade economist and I believe we are one of the most nurturing and welcoming communities in Economics.
Very much looking forward to delivering the European Economic Association Lecture at the @ASSAMeeting this coming Saturday. I'll try to share my slides for the talk shortly. The paper draft will come in a few weeks.

If you missed the Tribute to Emmanuel Farhi on Tuesday (economics.harvard.edu/event/a-tribut…), you can now watch it here: harvard.zoom.us/rec/play/IVpw5… Deeply moving speeches by relatives, coauthors and friends, and masterful overviews of his path-breaking contributions by giants in his fields.

I've just selected referees for my last assignment at @QJEHarvard. It's been a thrilling six-year journey. Special thanks to all the referees who have helped me in this endeavor. Although your countless hours of work were not financially remunerated, they were deeply appreciated!

Here's a link to my slides, in case you may be interested: scholar.harvard.edu/sites/scholar.… I ended up spending a significant amount of time reviewing the "charted waters," but that seemed important when speaking to a general-interest audience. Please do share any comments/suggestions.

Related to my last RT, I have refrained from publicly commenting on the prosecution of Catalan politicians and civil society leaders that has taken place in Spain recently. The reason for this is that the trials bunched together folks with distinct levels of culpability (1/8)

Very sad news for Harvard, but congratulations, @GitaGopinath, and best of luck! We will miss you. 👇👇👇 First Deputy Managing Director Geoffrey Okamoto to Leave IMF, Gita Gopinath to Be IMF’s New First Deputy Managing Director

One of the first papers I ever wrote, when I was an aspiring macroeconomist, was on capital-labor substitution. It was a term paper for Metrics and J. Hausman didn’t think much of it (got a B, I think). It is now one of my most cited papers and its results appear to hold up! 👇🏼👇🏼
Hurray! Together with great coauthors @DomiEhrenberger, Tomas + Zuzana we finally got it published: Our #metaanalysis on the elasticity of substitution b/w capital and labor, a.k.a. the “Death to the Cobb-Douglas production function” made it to the @RevEconDyn. Thread:

PLEASE READ @AlexMasPton's incredibly disturbing thread. Andreu Mas-Colell, the world-renowned Spanish economist, is being harshly prosecuted by a politicized non-judiciary tribunal in Spain. He faces harsh financial penalties for what appear to be bogus accusations 👇🏽👇🏽
Normally I would not be posting personal developments on this website, but in this case I have a pressing concern. My dad, Spanish economist Andreu Mas-Colell, is dealing with an incredibly difficult and unjust situation. 1/

Rest In Peace, sweet soul. You left us way too early, but your warmth, wit and brilliance will stay with us forever.
