people are asking “what’s the obsession with women’s hair” and the answer actually comes from the fact 4/5 of these come from desert countries. by covering your head in silk, you’re actually less likely to overheat. they have the same origin as male head garments

for anyone curious about the science: the shemagh (keffiyeh) protects the head from direct sunlight while being breathable enough to ventilate your head (or neck) via natural wind. this technique predates abrahamic religion but cultural overlap kinda combined it with religion

patriarchy def affects how much “modesty” is enforced on men vs women but yeah it generally comes from the same principle. these are generally also light weight, loose fabric bc it protects your body from the sun while also letting wind cool you down
