I'm not saying this was the dealbreaker, but one thing to note about Defiant is that it is very, very tall. (Shown here alongside an S-70/Black Hawk variant for scale.)
🧵: I’d like to tell you about Lora Trout, the pilot who died in the helicopter crash in Texas on Friday. She was a friend of mine and beloved by some of the best people I know.
I'm breaking my 10-year streak of no "personal news" on Twitter to announce... some personal news! Thrilled to be joining @jonostrower at @theaircurrent as senior editor with a focus on #eVTOL and emerging tech.
Three fatal in-flight break-ups of Robinson R44 helicopters in the past six weeks. Zero alarm bells from @FAANews or @NTSB. It's wild what the helicopter industry has simply normalized.
William Langewiesche would have you believe he’s the only aviation writer brave enough to speak the truth about the #737Max. Instead, he’s just recycling stereotypes the rest of us have long since discarded.
9/ I’ve focused on Lora because I knew her. But my sympathies also go out to the loved ones of her student, Ty Wallis, who sounds like a remarkable person himself. RIP.
I've always thought a helicopter is the best way to see the country but it turns out a gyroplane is pretty neat, too. Tagged along on a 2-day trip from Houston to LA this week, here are a few snaps.
2/ When I met Lora, she was working for the Forest Service as a member of Teton Helitack out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She was a wildland firefighter, helicopter manager, short haul rescuer and EMT — clearly, a bad-ass.
Wow, @AmericanAir just responded to my @USDOT complaint (the only one I’ve ever filed) with an email that essentially says, “Sucks to be you.” The contrast with its more successful competitors is mind-blowing. Keep winning, American. 🥲
