To my great regret, I will not be presenting the Best Storytelling award today as the organisers would not permit political statements. Here's what I would have said, and my message explaining my reasoning for withdrawing. #ceasefireNOW
Hello everyone. I’m Meghna Jayanth, I’ve worked as a narrative designer for over a decade now on games like 80 Days, Sable, and Thirsty Suitors - which launched just last week.

We make games to dream with our players - we invite them into our fantastical worlds when they need a refuge from the real, we let people step into other lives, other realities. This year’s shortlist demonstrates the capacity video games have to tell stories that are strange, thrilling, engaging - but most importantly, human.

We’re here to celebrate video games - but we are all also human beings who live in the world, and it’s impossible to ignore that while we celebrate here a genocide is taking place in Palestine, supported by our government. In the spirit of our shared humanity, I ask everyone here tonight to join me in calling for a ceasefire now. Not in our name.

Every game is an act of love, to players we might never meet. I couldn’t be prouder to introduce the nominees for Best Storytelling.
We are honored to have narrative designer Meghna Jayanth presenting an award at the @GoldenJoysticks on November 10, 2023. Get ready for an unforgettable night! @betterthemask #GoldenJoystickAwards

An anon account has been naming abusers in the games industry. Alexis Kennedy is one of them. I can't speak to the motives of the anon, but Alexis is a well-known predator in the games industry. I have been warning people about him for years.

pretty much every video games news story rn boils down to the corporate vandalism of human creativity, art, leisure, time & dignity

BG3's actually done some great spacious narrative design work teaching the player to trust the systems through amusing & dramatic failure outcomes, tempting them away from save scumming without designing in hostility to it - it's *persuasive design* rather than *punitive design*
Baldur's Gate 3's huge launch has reignited the age-old debate about save scumming. bit.ly/3KybA2A

"Nobody at ArenaNet is safe from the hand of reddit" Every single one of us working in the games industry should be concerned by this decision. But our concern needs to lead to action. This is just one of the reasons why we need unions.

the deluge of industry-wide layoffs is an opportunity for c-suites everywhere to push through unpopular policies. make workers feel precarious & fearful and use that uncertainty to reduce their options. even if you aren’t laid off, the layoffs affect your rights.
