We are angry and alarmed at reports that our own elected representatives chose to turn down an EU offer of visa-free touring by British musicians, after reassurances that our £101.5bn #CreativeArts and £5.8bn #MusicIndustry were a priority. 👉 musiciansunion.org.uk/all-news-and-f… (1/4)
White text and yellow quotation marks on a plain grey background. Text says: "With the British music business having been devastated by Covid-19 and with no end in sight to the black hole of cancelled concerts, tours, festivals and regular gigs that is the very bedrock of our world-class industry, the news, if true, that our own elected representatives chose to turn down such an offer is nigh-on unbelievable." Horace Trubridge, Musicians' Union General Secretary.

The Government has announced plans to impose a catastrophic 50% funding cut to arts subjects at higher education (HE) level in England, including music. Have your say in the consultation before 6 May 👇

We're affiliated to the Labour Party, we have been since 1943 & are proud to be so. But our policy on Brexit is clear. Staying in the EU is still the best option for musicians. We support a #PeoplesVote. We can not support any deal that removes freedom of movement for musicians.

Hi @RishiSunak. Today you said the Job Support Scheme applies to everyone “whatever job they do”. Does that mean you’re increasing SEISS so that self employed people get an equal level of support, & closing gaps that 38% musicians and 3m #ExcludedUK fall through? #covidbriefing

Staying in the EU is still the best option for musicians. We will oppose the @UKLabour NEC’s Brexit position, which sits on the fence. We’re proud to support Motion 13 at Labour Party Conference, which commits to backing Remain immediately. #WorkingInTheEU #Lab19

We’ve received reports of venues and events asking musicians to work for free. This is not acceptable. Many artists are looking for paid work after losing all their bookings due to Covid-19. Being expected to work for free only adds to the stress that they are already under.

We are delighted to be nominating @Keir_Starmer for Labour Party leader. Keir has been a strong supporter of musicians. He understands the challenges musicians working in the EU are facing and what we need to do to meet them. #AnotherFutureIsPossible cards.twitter.com/cards/18ce547k…

Hi Laura. The MU is voting the same way as @unisontweets. We will also be opposing the NEC statement. Staying in the EU is still the best option for musicians. #Lab19

This is not good enough. Extending the income support schemes is welcome, but is the Government expecting musicians to survive on 20% of their usual income? And will they just continue to ignore the 38% of musicians who fall through gaps in #SEISS? We need clarity now.
The Self-Employment Income Support Scheme extension will support viable traders who are facing reduced demand over the winter months, covering 20 per cent of average monthly trading profits via a government grant.
Self-Employment Income Support Scheme extended until 30 April 2021

The Prime Minister is wrong. The £1.57bn is going to help organisations and institutions the Government calls ‘the jewels in the crown’ – not the musicians, freelancers and other workers who make these places what they are. #MusicDeservesBetter
The Chancellor's attitude to struggling musicians and the arts sector is clear: it's time to retrain and find "new opportunities". No matter what the PM says, this government's complacent approach to this world-leading sector is putting livelihoods at risk @WeAreTheMU #PMQs

We’re in Parliament Square supporting #WeMakeEvents #FreelanceDancers and 38% musicians who are #ExcludedUK, calling on Government to #SaveTheArts and #LetMusicLive. Creative industries contributed £111.7 billion to the UK in 2018, equivalent to £306 million every day.
