1/2. So excited to share @UlsterMuseum is the NI stop for @NationalGallery's bicentenary ‘National Treasures’ nationwide tour! Unique to our exhibition, sponsored by @EY_ireland, Caravaggio’s 'The Supper at Emmaus' will be reunited with his 'The Taking of Christ' from @NGIreland
A painting by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571 – 1610, The Supper at Emmaus, 1601, depicting the scene of the Last Supper with Jesus Christ dressed in red and white clothing with his right arm raised, and three others sitting and standing at a table, a white table cloth and food on the table - a fruit bowl is about to fall off the table. Two of the followers of Jesus, wearing dark browns and creams, leap from their seats, scarcely able to believe their eyes. The fourth subject is standing.
A painting by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610), The Taking of Christ, 1602. The scene used a strong light-and-dark contrast, giving it an extraordinary sense of drama. Jesus Christ is in the centre wearing red and blue clothing with his arms stretched out in front and fingers intertwined being seized by armoured temple guards. Another figure central to the painting is Judas, who has identified Christ with a kiss, while a fleeing disciple on ten left is in disarray on the left is St John the Evangelist.
