I've tried to approach this election unflinchingly & w/ clear eyes, but this is the absolute worst case scenario. We're in an epochal shift in American history of the worst sort, &, while it does not spell the absolute end of Amer liberal democracy, MAGA is a fatal illness. 1/

Yesterday Trump announced he's nominating Pete Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense. Hegseth's a prominent Fox News personality & veterans advocate, but he also has strong ties to the Christian far right that I've not seen fully exposed yet. Here's a thread w/ receipts... 1/

We're living in the moment the American founders feared most: A populist authoritarian (they used the term "demagogue" -- same difference) has gained power through a legitimate election. Worse, Trump has the most concentrated, anti-democratic coalition since the Confederacy. 4/

The sharp-eyed folks at @mmfa noticed that Alabama Supr. Court Chief Justice Tom Parker gave an intrvw to NAR prophet Johnny Enlow, published the same day as the court's recent decision that embryos count as ppl. Parker references the "Seven Mountains." This is very important. 1/

I don't use these terms lightly: I do not believe that the United States has ever been closer to tipping over into outright autocracy -- with attendant varieties of kleptocracy, theocracy, & oligarchy as the interests that surround Trump like pilot fish claim their shares. 9/

1st, what's the Christian far right? It's a coalition of different Christian social movts bound together by aggressive theologies & (often but not always) white supremacy. This is the extreme, militant end of the spectrum of what is popularly called "Christian nationalism." 3/

... of a Christian America. Trump will, almost certainly pardon most (all?) January 6th rioters, whose "bravery" will be celebrated by the regime's propaganda. I suspect some mainstream media will accommodate, if not embrace, this retelling, cloaked in hearing "both sides." 7/
