In ST 2020 I’m cleaning up the cages after finishing work with the MiLB guys when Shohei walks in wanting to do his cage work. It’s just Shohei, Ippei, & me in the cages. Watching how he worked as I put balls on the tee gave me a perspective that changed how I coach forever.
Shohei Ohtani now has a dozen multi-HR MLB games! 🔥

At a showcase this fall a player’s dad asked where I coach. When I said @FalconsBase his response was, “Guess you gotta start somewhere.” I was polite, but clearly it didn’t cross his mind that I love coaching JUCO & choose to do it. Be curious, not judgmental.

So much baseball content focuses on what players “should” be doing & coaches sharing to potential employers what they’d have players doing… Meanwhile an NFL Head Coach is deliberate in earning the attention of players rather than feeling entitled to it. 🤷‍♂️ Random thought.

Next stop…Scranton, PA! Excited to jump back into the college game with @FalconsBase this Spring as Hitting Coach! Thank you @CoachMcCarry for the opportunity to join a great program in a role that will challenge me to continuously grow while impacting players!

“Attack Angle is determined by timing.” Attack Angle is probably the most misunderstood concept among young hitters. Consistently having the same Attack Angle for every swing regardless of pitch type = swinging. Clustering Attack Angles vs FBs & OS = hitting.

Swing PATH is somewhat fixed path for given swing Last swing (Verdugo-Buehler) baseballsavant.mlb.com/sporty-videos?… Looks like this for swing path: 3 different point in swing Attack ANGLE however is determined by timing Thank you Statcast Viz Jock @danabennett for tremendous work

    Replying to @TJeske_SeaDoo
It had little to do with what he did & everything to do with the depth of his focus mentally. He didn’t give me the impression of just hitting balls off the tee working physically, it was as if he was working mentally even harder. Appreciative of the opportunity to experience it.

With the conclusion of the @GoPaddleHeads season I originally thought that I’d be headed back to the East Coast for the Winter… But…PLOT TWIST… Excited to be joining @MontanaGrizSB as Hitting Coach for the upcoming season! Why not think different & take on new challenges?

“14 Days to Stop the Spread” was nearly 2 years ago, MLB owners have locked out the players, we’ve got Russia invading the Ukraine, & #hittingtwitter still arguing swing up or down & tee vs no tee…uncle…🤷‍♂️ Can we at least agree mental skills need more attention in hitting?

Coaching & instructing aren’t interchangeable. Instructors tell/sell the mechanics, drills, & products you “need” to avoid failure. Coaches teach the skills, habits, & behaviors that push you to find the limits of your potential while knowing failure is still entirely possible.

Once you start seeing the game through the lens of Run Creation vs Run Prevention the swing doesn’t seem nearly as important & worth the time we spend talking about it. Hitters hit the way winners win. 🤷‍♂️🤙
Winning is hard in college baseball, but each run you don't allow starting at 5 nets you a 10% increase in win probability in D1 baseball. In the SEC, it's more of a coin flip when you allow 5 runs, and winning is harder when you give up more than 5. Offenses: aim for 6 runs.

Love hearing from multiple friends how great Brian Bannister’s #abca presentation was about Approach Angles vs IVB in pitching… How can you understand a good bat path if you don’t understand pitching? It’s all angles. From 2018 at @108_Performance’s Bridge the Gap ⬇️…(1/3)

One of my favorite scenes from Ted Lasso that is very representative of coaching in my experience given how easy it can be to fall into the trap of judging the player before fully understanding the player. Listen ➡️ Learn ➡️ Lead vs Judge ➡️ Tell ➡️ Dictate

91 year old grandma is on hospice. She’s been smoking & drinking Budweiser for nearly 80 years & told me she wanted to get out of bed & enjoy a smoke to celebrate the holiday. Sent the whole family this video… If this isn’t what the holidays are about I’m not sure what is! 🤷‍♂️
