something i’ve always found surprising when i’ve read letters written by average people from only 150-200 years ago is how mellifluous and deep their prose often sounds. i’m not talking about writers, but random people with grade-school educations

Funnily enough I've found writings from low-to-middle class people in that era to show casual misspellings as incredibly common. Writing coherently was certainly not a given. Try to read through surveys of the time and the modern casual text will look like a literary masterpiece

The problem is the average person 150-200 years ago was not “educated” like today. Higher education was until relatively recently an elite affair, and free compulsory education was often very poor or not even accessible (though this definitely varied locally)

You do realize that when people say “the Aztecs did human sacrifices *before the Spanish and the Portuguese arrived*” they are trying to justify European colonization, right? The implication is that Europeans saved the natives from a greater evil when this is simply not true.
