I went to bed in Africa with a heavy heart last night feeling sadness like never before. My team mate for 33 years was no longer with me. Your hundreds of messages showed how well @PaulSherwen was loved. Let's think of Katherine and his children with love just now.

On the eve of Paul's funeral in Uganda, can I just thank you all for the outpouring of love and affection for the both of us. It has helped me through an awful week. You are right, I think we were joined at the hip. He smiles at us from a great height. Always will.

I have scrolled through Tweets non-stop for 45mins and then went back to the top and found 600 new ones. @PaulSherwen would have been so proud to know how much you thought him. Thank you all. Riders, friends, fans, federation, media for your expressions of love

That was in many ways the greatest and also the saddest Tour of the 47 I have done. The Tour was so aware of my loss of Sherwen that they went out of their way to get me through the three weeks. AND, well done @bobkeroll for a great job in the seat to my left.

Thanks everyone for all your comments throughout the day. I have just put down the headphones and you all kept me going. I enjoyed my day with @bobkeroll and the boys, but of course, like you, I missed Paul. Now we go forward together.

Grass is cut, bags are packed, Brussels tomorrow. The NBC team will be great, but my 47th Tour will be different. It will be a great race this year and it will honour Paul's name. But who will make my coffee at 06.30 every day for next month?😥

Thank you all for your kind remarks on my 50th Tour. You make me so happy and I am pleased I brought a little light into your lives, too. Phil

Really saddened that ITV will not be able to show Le Tour after next year. Its history on ITV goes back almost 60 years when it started on London Weekend TV with David Saunders. Big thoughts to @millarmind and @nedboulting

Time to leave South Africa and head home to the UK. These past three weeks have been both uplifting and very sad after the passing of Paul Sherwen. I hope to see many of you in Manchester Cathedral on Feb 6th to celebrate Paul's life. Have a very merry Christmas and great New Yr.

Thanks to everyone who watched the Tour on @NBCSNCycling . It was an amazing race and the winners were not just the brilliant Slovenian riders, but the organisers, our technicians and the race itself. We all got to Paris and brought relief along the way.

Arrived in Sacramento for the ATOC and ready for a good race. Just one man missing and he won't be forgotten.

What can I say other than a big thank you my British friends who saw the tribute to Paul on @itvcycling on Tuesday evening. You are all simply fantastic and are getting me through the Tour without him. This is a great race and Paul would have loved it.
