To mark the rechalking of the Cerne Abbas Giant, here is an extract from my book Upon A White Horse – in which I write about meeting the Giant on May Day. If you enjoy my writing, please do share.

Please indulge some parental pride. I love my eldest son’s self-portrait. He’s called James. The rabbit is Jenny.

I was admiring my gran’s sewing machine today. I think it was probably her mother’s. Amazing that a mass-produced tool was made to look like *this*.

I am on the train to Edinburgh and someone in my carriage has just referred to Haymarket as Haymarché. Please let there be another strike right now.

Thomas Hardy’s Cottage. He was born in the upstairs bedroom closest to the door, and wrote Far From The Madding Crowd in the room with the roses below the window.

Sent a copy of my book to a friend in Spain. It cost me £11 to post and then he had to pay almost 10 Euros in custom charges at his end. Quite apart from what Brexit has done to business, it has tainted these little pleasantries and courtesies. It’s a poison.

This is my favourite gravestone in Cathcart Cemetery. I'd like to tell you about it.

The Antonine Wall is a whole lot of nothing, but quite a cool nothing. I’d love to know how many people walk the whole thing. Very few, I suspect.

First morning train into Glasgow from where I live on the southside now an hour later. Last train home 1935 rather than 2305. Everyone who relies on trains is dealing with something similar. Yes, it’s complicated, but can’t help feeling Scottish Govt is letting the country down.

Just want to say that @PippaCrerar has done the public a huge service through her stories on Cummings/Barnard Castle and now the Number Ten party. Massive gratitude and respect to her.

One of my favourite Glasgow buildings just catching the light. I wish some use could be found for this place.
