𧡠1/10 Here we go!
I interviewed @ulalaunch CEO @torybruno at HQ on launch day π
I had NO IDEA that this legacy player had survived at least 3 separate "death sentences" to make it out the other side. The lessons are incredible. Thread π
6/10 ON REUSABILITY
Tory's take: "You won't believe me, but reusability isn't that much cheaper."
ULA's plan is to use a new breakthrough technology to produce inflatable heat shields that allows them to recover expensive engines while burning all propellant for maximum
Brother i love your stuff, you do great reporting, but respectfully, how many times do we need to learn the same lesson?
"AQ will never recover / ISIS will never recover / Hezbollah will never recover" -- they promote new leaders, and the ideology will live on.
1/ β‘ NEW EPISODE: I sat down with Joshua Steinman (@joshsteinman), CEO of @GalvanickCo, at to discuss one of the most critical yet overlooked threats facing America - the cybersecurity of our industrial control systems.
10/10 TAKEAWAYβ‘
@ulalaunch built a strategy from constraints, not freedom.
@torybruno has been a visionary leader, and has the company back in the fight.

3/10 DIAGNOSIS
Bruno identified the problem: "There are two monopolies - conquest vs service.
Conquest monopolies destroy competitors, stay agile. Service monopolies focus on customers, go blind to threats.
ULA was service. We didn't even believe SpaceX was real competition."
2/10 CRISIS #1π₯
2014: Bruno joins ULA as CEO
Same year: Senator McCain passes law OUTLAWING their main product (Atlas rocket) by 2017
"Rough first week on the job - my only viable product has been outlawed by Congress and the company has to close"
9/10 THE VISION
"A week away from this room in space is an imagination-defying level of abundance of natural resources. It will change the destiny of our species.
Nuclear power is the key to unlocking practical transportation to reach it."
4/10 CRSIS #2: FINANCING
Can't raise external equity (50-50 Boeing/Lockheed ownership means 1% investor controls everything)
Bruno's solution: "I went to suppliers and said 'pay for your own component development, get 2x the work'"
Creative constraints = creative solutions
5/10 STRATEGIC BET
While competitors chase LEO commercial market, Bruno went contrarian:
"I couldn't compete on price with equity investors buying market share below cost. So we bet on VALUE in exotic government missions where we had advantages."
8/10 LEADERSHIP LESSON π¨βπΌ
"In national security space, technology is center stage. But the secret is - none of that's worth a damn if you don't have skilled, dedicated people who know how to use it.
It's really only about people." - @torybruno
