It is not discriminatory to open Oxbridge up to talented students who do not have the resources to game the system. Rather, it is recognition that those who succeed against the odds have something special to offer. My letter to the editor in @thetimes today👇

Huge admirer of Rishi Sunak but his position on lockdown is simply wrong. It would have been morally irresponsible of the govt not to implement lockdown in spring 2020 - the failure to do so would have killed tens-of-thousands of people who survived covid 1/2

He is entirely correct - and it’s only the tip of the iceberg. The Government Communication Service needlessly wastes hundreds-of-millions in taxpayer money each year. Every department is over staffed, under qualified and forced (by ministers) to run pointless campaigns without
Chief Secretary to Treasury Darren Jones told #Newsnight last night that ‘the government communication service was spending hundreds of millions of pounds on filming content for Conservative ministers’ social media channels’ @BBCNewsnight

Everyone who worked in Downing Street during the pandemic will recognise and agree with Dom’s analysis. The idea we would have had our own VTF / vaccine programme without Brexit is for the birds
Totally misses multiple points. E.g A/ The Cabinet Office said we shd join the EU scheme AFTER we'd left the EU. Do you think they would have said 'EU scheme looks shit let's go it alone PM' if we were inside?! Absurd argument. B/ We had to BREAK EU laws/regs (and Whitehall

In addition, without lockdown the NHS simply could not have survived & would have been overwhelmed. This would have seen an even greater backlog of excess deaths for missed cancer appointments etc

Generation Covid faces a post-pandemic catastrophe, with opportunities diminishing most for those without the advantages of wealth, connections and class. Why we must double down on levelling up. My Spectator column today 👇

Pundits always too keen to blame comms professionals as it’s the lens through which they view politics. In reality the problem is rarely comms. It is nearly always the *decision making* of senior leaders & policy makers (issue here is poor judgements from PM & SG) #CommsProblem
Starmer government needs to get a grip of Comms.

Tired working class stereotypes still used frequently in Westminster (via @thetimes this morning). We really need to do better if we are to tackle the class gap in our politics. Anyway, if anyone needs me I’ll be down’t pit with me whippet turning the air blue

Covid revisionism has begun. But it wasn’t lockdown that was the government’s biggest mistake - it was locking down too late. Read my piece on why lockdown was politically, economically and morally the only option👇

100 percent correct from @rcolvile 👇 Plenty of things could have been improved during the pandemic but Boris was absolutely right in what he said about brexit / covid vaccine
But we would have come under absolutely huge pressure to sign up to the EU vaccine scheme. Even post-Brexit, there were loud voices denouncing govt for little Englander stupidity of going it alone.

Is the Tory’s ‘don’t give Starmer a super majority’ message a good strategy? Probably not - here’s why: It’s designed to motivate the core Tory vote - especially those considering shifting their allegiance to Reform. As a political strategy, it’s a high risk move. Telling

Thread for those interested in govt comms 👇 This paper, published today by @instituteforgov, outlines my thoughts from my time in govt dealing with brexit/covid. It sets out ways govt can modernise and improve comms - particular in times of crisis
