The young man from Rockland County who has polio paralysis is from a large activist anti-vaccine family.
Often, one would find that an experience like this would lead one to realize they’ve made a grave error, speak up in favor of vaccination, & ensure this doesn’t happen again.
Not here.
To realize that this young man cannot walk because of their false belief system must be too painful, because the family is now taking the unique step in insisting that he does not, in fact, have polio.
How sad for everyone involved.
Disinformation is truly tragic.
He is 37 with melanoma and came in for treatment. During his visit his wife mentioned that she’s at Sloan.
After finishing with her husband, I asked, “what are you getting treated for?”
The 36 year old woman said, “stage IV breast.”

Her vaccinations are likely not effective given her immune compromise. She’s relying on those around her to not carry preventable diseases.
That risk goes up with every unvaccinated adult or child she encounters.
This is why I care about vaccines.

They have a baby. My heart sank.
But I understood her double mask.
She likely has a white count of 2.
This is who unvaccinated children threaten.
Any infection can fell her, and most cancer patients die of infection - especially patients age 20-40.

A story about anti-vaccine harassment:
I spent 30 minutes on the phone with an important person in the community who runs a highly regarded non-profit health organization. I asked them to endorse polio vaccination messaging.
They refused.
I couldn’t understand it.
Judaism allows & requires abortion in many circumstances. The mother’s well-being takes priority over a fetus, acc to Jewish law. A fetus which harms a woman is termed a murderer.
An overturned Roe will result in Jewish women everywhere being unable to practice their religion.
If you have an opinion on the Israel-Hamas war and you haven’t read todays NYT investigation into what was done to live and dead women’s bodies, you need to sit down.
These posts kill me every day, and I keep wanting to unfollow @AuschwitzMuseum.
We need to remain uncomfortable when faced with reminders of injustice everywhere, because this will cause us to rise up against injustice again.
8 July 1942 | A French Jewish girl, Denise Repper, was born in Paris to Alexander and Madeleine.
In December 1943 she was deported to #Auschwitz. After the selection she was murdered in a gas chamber.
So here’s my story of how I went from being an anti-vaccine, fearful mother who selectively vaccinated on an alternative schedule -> to a pro-vaccine advocate.
It’s not very dramatic, but these stories never are.
We start in 2008, where I am a new cancer survivor, age 23.
