Britain spent a decade choosing to be smaller in the world.
Right now the rules on communications, energy and trade are being rewritten. By China. By Russia. By countries that take their own security seriously. We need to be at that table. That's a choice we must make.

The bottom line tonight is that the military establishment didn’t win the argument with Labour cabinet and MPs that they needed to cut spending, raise borrowing, raise taxes or cut welfare to fund higher defence spending.
Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves do not agree with John
Rachel and Labour need to pull back from the brink. It will be disastrous on many levels if they define themselves against the defence investment we need to protect our way of life.
HMT official: Reeves "will always do what is right and needed to keep this country safe" ... notes that she has been working with Starmer to make cuts across govt to fund DIP. Adds: "Let's be clear on what John is asking for: cuts to schools and hospitals."
Treasury thinks Defence is a lemons market, but it's acting like a low-information buyer that can't tell the bad from the good (eg reports it will treat GCAP like HS2). Instead, it should work with MoD to fix the market failures in defence. jeegar.substack.com/p/the-treasury…
