Thrilled to see this paper coming out in Econometrica! I'm grateful to the editor and the referees and to my mentors for helping me to realize its full potential.
I run an RCT on occupational safety & health (OSH) committees, the key worker voice institution for workplace health & safety. They have small, positive effects on OSH, with no evidence they are costly in terms of wages, employment, or labor productivity econometricsociety.org/publications/e…

It has been very saddening but not altogether surprising to follow #econtwitter’s current #metoo moment. A short 🧵 based on my experience conducting research related to reporting of (sexual) harassment.
Seems like a good time to retweet this paper: "Monitoring harassment in organizations", by @LauraBoudreau @SylvainChassang Ada Gonzales-Torres @rachelmheath dropbox.com/s/lt0r4jgeovuh…

Teaser alert: Silence does != no problems. We find that providing plausible deniability about reporting through exogenous garbling increases reporting of workplace harassment by 46-288%, with a larger increase for more sensitive types of harassment.
Harassment in organizations: Is it a good sign when no one complains? Plausible deniability liberates victims' voice in surveys, from @LauraBoudreau @SylvainChassang @adagt3 and @rachelmheath nber.org/papers/w31011

In our research on union leaders in Myanmar, we find that on union leaders are positively selected & cultivate collective action in the labor movement through a coordinating role. So fun to chat abt this work w/ my fav @VirginiaMinni . Thanks @faculti for the opportunity!
Social movements are catalysts for crucial institutional changes. To succeed, they must coordinate members’ views and actions. Laura Boudreau @LauraBoudreau @Columbia_Biz and Virginia Minni @VirginiaMinni @ChicagoBooth discuss union leaders within #Myanmar's burgeoning labor

Theory predicts that providing plausible deniability through garbling can increase reporting of sensitive info. We evaluate this in a real-world setting & find large effects on workers' reporting of harassment. We also consider other ways to increase reporting-more in the paper!
Read @LauraBoudreau, @SylvainChassang (#PrincetonU), @adagt3, and @RachelMHeath on how "hard garbling" survey schemes can increase worker willingness to report harassment: bit.ly/3eMXey1

    Replying to @LauraBoudreau
Eradicating sexual harassment from econ requires taking systematic approaches to (1) increase the benefits by having material actions be taken against perpetrators and (2) design reporting systems that reduce reputation/retaliation cost (& are robust to strategic misreporting).

From studying people’s reporting decisions (and being a woman in the field), my sense is that people rarely come forward because the costs are enormous relative to the benefits. E.G., see @abicadams @EmilyNix100 @ningzhang0927 and @KristiinaHuttu2's important work on the costs.

Extremely delighted to be interviewed about my research on multinational buyers' enforcement of labor law in #Bangladesh on @vox_dev talks! Fellow podcast fans may understand! Podcast is up!
Can multinational buyers provide their suppliers in developing countries with incentives to comply with local labour laws? @LauraBoudreau describes how an intervention in #Bangladesh led to significantly improved compliance & safety: ow.ly/uAWF50wSPmr @Columbia_Biz
