Immigrants are Scotland: your NHS nurses, your kids’ teachers, your next door neighbours. This ‘island of strangers’ rhetoric is dangerous and dehumanising. A stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet—and Scotland is better off because of immigrants.

This won’t ring true for voters in Dunfermline and the rest of Fife after the Labour administration raised council tax 8.2% this year and will raise it a further 5% in the next two years. The majority of Scottish earners pay less tax than others in the UK.

The resolution was simple: if a majority of Scots vote for pro-independence parties on the list in 2026, then it's a mandate to negotiate for independence. It's not about party hegemony, with one party holding all the power. It's a multipolar approach which includes every party.

And we must face the fact that the SNP is not the only force. We are polling at ~30% for 2026, while independence is at ~52%. We cannot impose our will upon the rest of the independence movement - and that there cannot be a sole SNP solution to delivering independence.

Blocking this resolution from the Annual Conference will not make it disappear. John Swinney promised to listen to the membership. You can't listen to the membership if we can't even debate each other on the party's plan for independence and the way forward for Scotland.

Compare that to the leadership's strategy: a mandate is only possible if the SNP wins a majority of seats. Not only does this shut out all other parties and independence supporters and say "only we can get independence," it is an impossible goal for us to achieve in 2026.
