I just wanted one day of good news for #Afghans. This is devastating.

I may not be interested in cricket, but the Afghan game persuaded me to write a history of #Afghan cricket in 2017. Reposting in honour of a historic win against my country. (And wishing the women cricketers were also still on the field.) @s_vrma @AANafgh afghanistan-analysts.org/en/reports/eco…

And. Now. Beating. Pakistan. Afghan cricketers go from strength to strength. Afghanistan zindabad!

For shame @BBCNews: You actually led on the #Taliban opening boys' high schools, called it a "welcome relief" for boys. But this was never in doubt. It's not news. As for the girls, you say "nothing's been said". Call this what it is: A de facto ban on older girls' education.

Look how lovely Kabul once was when there were very few cars, clean air and far more fit and healthy cyclists. This was 2002.
Great! I hope there comes a day when everybody - men and women- could use bikes to go around Kabul. It is good for the environment and for people’s health.

Strong interview from Fatema Gailani: constructive proposals for what happens next and some bitter condemnation for those who've failed #Afghanistan, and all from the heart.

On yet another dark day for Kabul's Hazaras, this piece by @AANafgh colleague, @ali_adili is worth re-reading: "A Community Under Attack: How successive governments failed west Kabul and the Hazaras who live there"

Going after 'Taleban remnants' meant mass indiscriminate arrests, torture, supporting Afghan allies' persecution of rivals, refusing Omar's surrender. US sabotaged the peace in 2001 - like it sabotaged the Republic in 2020-2021.
20 years ago he arrived in Kabul, promising to get rid of “remnants of Al-Qaeda & Taliban.” Now he is the architect of Taliban’s return to power & the notion that they are not America’s enemy. No remorse? @US4AfghanPeace (video via @mughalbha)

Why is the US still holding two Afghans in #Guantanamo, asserting even now that they are a threat to US security, despite the US war in Afghanistan being over? Neither man was detained on the battlefield... 1/3

“Why are you selling your clothes? I asked an older woman. “Is it to make some extra money?” “No, son,” she replied, “We need to buy bread.” #Afghanistan is in economic free fall since the #Taleban takeover. @AANafgh looks at what can/should be done.

Afghans tell horror stories of economic collapse: "Exhausted and stunned by the continuous onslaught of crisis and tragedy," a near complete lack of options and yet - and this is so Afghan - still "looking after others even worse off than themselves."

My favourite picture of this year is from...1996: two very disgruntled girls in front of their closed school. It features in the second report in @AANafgh's series on education, which looks at how Taleban views on schools have changed over time. afghanistan-analysts.org/en/reports/rig…

But surely Pakistan knew the possible consequences of its policy to support a Taleban military takeover.
The IMF says Iran, Pakistan & Tajikistan will need a combined $900MM to host at least one million Afghan refugees as Afghanistan's economic woes could accelerate refugee exodus. @gzeromedia #GraphicTruth gzeromedia.com/the-graphic-tr…
