Canadians are shaking their heads at what’s happening in Washington, but we’ve got our own problems on the violent right-wing front that are ignored at our peril. ips-journal.eu/topics/securit…@ips_journal
I live in downtown Ottawa and so far, this protest has shut down local small businesses, given a platform to racist confederate flag-waving, defaced the statue of Terry Fox, and treated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier like a parking lot. None of these things end a pandemic.
The deal between the @NDP and Liberals is an example of the best kind of politics: it delivers on policy ideas that will help people in real ways, it strengthens Canada’s democratic institutions, and it unlocks new possibilities for progressives seeking to make change. 🧵
Ahh, yes. The same Viktor Orbán who has banned “gender ideology”, outlawed and publicly shredded LGBTQ+-inclusive material for kids, & who warns about becoming “a mixed race”. Totally normal mainstream conservative stuff. 1/2
And that’s a completely apart from the raging double standard in the way it’s being treated by Ottawa police and the city compared to many other demonstrations over the years.
People who live downtown are on edge. We’ve had personal trucks barrelling down residential streets, parking illegally and honking at all hours. Minimum-wage workers I talked to are scared that protesters are going to come in to stores to harass them (as has already happened).
PM Carney appears to have used section 107 to squash workers’ right to strike with no plan about what comes next. In one move he managed to escalate the conflict, provoke the union, and unite the labour movement against his government - all while making a fair settlement harder.
Tonight, the heads of Canada’s unions met in an emergency session to stand united behind Air Canada Flight Attendants in defying the government’s unconstitutional attack on workers’ rights.
An Ottawa judge will order a ten-day injunction against the use of air horns at protests. Wording of order is still to be hashed out. But a win for the plaintiff resident and potentially, all others living downtown.
I just spent 2.5 minutes on my street, and not a single car went by! Looking forward to shutting it down to cars permanently in light of this new data.
New data shows that very few cyclists and pedestrians are using Queen Elizabeth Driveway when it's closed to cars. Watch this video as a great example. When I recorded it yesterday afternoon, not a single pedestrian or cyclist passed me for the entire two and a half minutes.
Ottawa parents - can confirm that @OttawaHealth is vaccinating kids born in 2017 (4 years old turning 5 this year) at Nepean Sportsplex! Walk in and open till 7:30 PM. Go go go! Cc @nilikm
Small miracles: 14 months ago we didn’t know anything about #COVID19. Today I got to help the rad @nilikm vaccinate hundreds of front line workers. When this ends, it’ll be because of community driven efforts & advocacy like this around the world. ❤️💉 Feeling hopeful!
