We overuse the word hero in sports, but with Jim Abbott we don't use it enough. Southpaw, our new @E60, was directed and edited by @MikeFarrellESPN. It premieres July 13 on @espn.

My father Dick Schaap would have turned 85 today. “He was the most talented person in our business," Dave Anderson said. "He could do anything in journalism, whether print or broadcasting. Whatever it took, he could do it, and do it as well if not better than anyone else.”

Just got off the phone with Jody Buckner, who called to me that her husband, the great Bill Buckner, one of the finest men I've known, died this morning. She wanted to share this statement: "After battling the disease of Lewy Body Dementia, (cont.)

Bill Buckner passed away early the morning of May 27th surrounded by his family. Bill fought with courage and grit as he did all things in life. Our hearts are broken but we are at peace knowing he is in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." Bill was 69.

Greg Gumbel was a giant in the business. Unflappable. I wrote for him at two Olympics, in Lillehammer and Atlanta. In Lillehammer, he was hosting the highest-rated unscripted show in tv history--second highest-rated, period, surpassed only by the last episode of MASH--and he was

Our interview with @MeyersLeonard, the former Portland and Miami center who is hoping to return to the NBA. Nearly two years ago, he used an antisemitic slur while playing Call of Duty on Twitch. A warning--this story includes offensive language.

In a text to my colleague @RussDinallo, who produced our E:60 story on Jared Lorenzen, Lorenzen's mother Janet confirmed that Jared died today. He was only 38. Janet said, "I lost my sweet boy today after a long hard fight."

With Christian McCaffrey heading to the Super Bowl, good time to revisit this Lisa McCaffrey story about his high school career from our 2018 profile for @E60. Probably my favorite soundbite ever, still rendering me speechless. CC: @simonpb17

Dad died 17 years ago today, at 67. Here he is in 1969 on the set of the Joe Namath Show with a few of his favorite people.

Back in 2016, I had the chance to sit down with Vin Scully for @E60. As you’d expect, everything he said was poetic, and profound, imbued with his deep humanity. Scully was saying farewell to baseball—but he was talking about much more than the game.

To reiterate, 44 qbs have gone first, second or third overall in the last 50 NFL drafts, and exactly two--Aikman and Peyton--have won Super Bowls starting for the teams that drafted them. That makes selecting qbs up high exceptionally risky. My parting shot for @OTLonESPN:

400,000 Americans died to defeat the fascists. What could possibly be more odious and un-American than to celebrate their ideology?
