Look at this image of Dr. Hossam Abu Safia approaching the cowards hiding in the tanks; it is hard to believe. Where else would one see something like this?
I’m so proud of that job! I did it because folks studying global education dev. alongside me at @Columbia didn’t seem to think experience *in the classroom* was all that important. I felt I needed to know what it was like to be on the ground to make any positive difference.
Getting three Master's degrees, including an MA in education from Columbia University, where they did their dissertation on nuclear disarmament education and spent a year teaching kids in the field, is apparently not qualification enough, but yapping on Twitter all day is
This is a man who’s spent months showing the world what the occupation was doing to hospitals, pleading with it to protect patients and healthcare infrastructure, whose 8 year old son was murdered by the IOF. It should not have come to this photo. Ever.
Yes… and? 😉
While my nuclear disarmament involvement preceded my education & development work, I am so proud to have worked in the classroom. It was never my end goal but I knew classroom experience would be valuable. I hope anyone who’s ever taught feels the same!
But nuclear weapons deter attacks so this must be fake news, right?
Either that, or nuclear deterrence is exposed for what it is: an abstract theory that’s touted to justify clinging onto weapons of mass murder.
Nukes are a scam. Pass it on.
Big thanks to @nytopinion for platforming (just a glimpse!) of the incredible disarmament work being done around the world!
And for giving a shockingly high number of people a convenient place to admit they’ve never seen a ring light before 🤭
“A world without nuclear weapons is totally possible,” says @Emma_Pike_, a nuclear disarmament consultant and activist. She shared her thoughts with Times Opinion on TikTok: nyti.ms/49buYeZ
To folks claiming that nuclear weapons are *only* for deterring nuclear attacks, then turning around and saying oh wait actually nukes are for preventing conventional warfare, which is it?
Never mind that nobody seems to have a solution for when deterrence theory fails.
I never studied elementary education! Or any kind of teaching haha. It was just an apprenticeship I took for a year (and some change) to get experience inside a classroom because I had absolutely zero idea what that was like. Learned a LOT.
All the unexcusable misogynist, sexist, and offensive stuff in the comments shouldn't hide the fact that @Emma_Pike_ has explained the idea of the #nuclearban to 8.7 Mio viewers within a few days. Thanks for all your support, fellas - keep retweeting!
Scrolling through the condescending, sexist, and batshit crazy comments to @Emma_Pike_’s appeal for nuclear disarmament is depressing but not surprising considering the political climate and riffraff on social media. Hang in there Emma and remember: “When they go low…” 👏💪🏻
1/ Ever noticed how most images we see of nuclear weapons are of missiles, mushroom clouds, and low-key dictators?
Here’s exactly how visuals shape the way we think about nuclear weapons, and how they tell a story that just isn’t true 👇 #nuclearweapons#media#photojournalism
