Russia has begun a nuclear weapons exercise, possibly timed to coincide with Putin visit to China. defensenews.com/global/europe/… So this is a good time to link to our new Russia Nuclear Notebook with overview and trends: • PDF: tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10.10… • Web: thebulletin.org/premium/2026-0…

No, no, no! Ukraine was not a “nuclear power.” Soviet nukes were left behind when USSR broke up. Moscow had the keys and Ukraine couldn’t have used them. They were shipped back to Russia. Important when people falsely/mistakenly claim they could have protected Ukraine now.
Ukraine was once the third-largest nuclear power in the world for a brief time. But it completely gave up its nuclear weapons. Here's what that means for Ukraine today as a Russian invasion looms. n.pr/3Ib9oea

This Russian New Year TV show is surreal and eerie. The Anschluss-like declaration “Like it or not, Russia is enlarging!" is followed by smiles and applause. Sure brings to mind the cabaret scene in Mel Brooks’ satirical movie Springtime For Hitler: youtu.be/ovCf9VRLnDY

During Russia's New Year special on state TV, they openly addressed the West to say, "Like it or not, Russia is enlarging!" The rest of the clip should give you a general idea as to the mood in the studio.

Question to @elonmusk: Here is a screenshot of a random aircraft flying over Poland. Is that illegal under your new doxxing policy?

Whether one agrees with the Trump administration’s assassination of #Soleimani, the statements and explanations by senior officials reek of confusion with unclear/contradictory messages and rationales. It is a warning that decision/strategy were incompetent and haphazard.
Trump: We committed an act of war to stop a war. Pompeo: Americans are safer now, but evacuate Iraq immediately, you're not safe. Pompeo: We're de-escalating. Esper: We're sending more troops.

For people in the Kremlin or elsewhere who imagine Putin could pop a nuke or two over Ukrainian forces to turn the tide of the war in his favor, read this from Colin Powell’s memoirs about whether to use nukes the 1991 Gulf War. #RussiaUkraineWar #nuclearweapons

Closing a nuclear chapter: The last monstrous Typhoon sub has depleted its reactor core. Once a highlight of Soviet might and Pentagon fear, 20 missiles with 200 warheads, two pressure hulls in one, swimming pool and sauna. Russian nuclear forces today: tandfonline.com/doi/epdf/10.10…

I grew up in a European country with multiple parties. Believe me, I’ve seen my share of political circus. But nothing could have prepared me for what we see in the United States now. Trump & GOP leadership are actively sabotaging the country. #Election2020
BAIER: You were asked about the concerns about a smooth transition and you said there will be a smooth transition to a 2nd Trump term. Were you being serious? POMPEO: We will have a smooth transition and we will see what people ultimately decided when the votes have been cast.

US officials say they don’t see any signs that Russia is dispersing or otherwise preparing to use nuclear weapons. “While the strategic threat of nuclear use has been there, we just have not seen anything tactical to suggest there is a proximate or elevated risk at this point.”
The U.S. and Russia are entering a risky period in which existing guardrails for averting military escalation are imperiled. With ⁦@glubold⁩ and ⁦@tggrovewsj.com/articles/russi…
