There is a lot to discuss about the Online Harms Act. Articles like this are unhelpful as they are so over the top that readers are not armed with information about how the law actually works to agree or disagree with the author.- Let's dial this down. /1

Online Harms Act itself? For free expression advocates, the harms and duties are as protective as you can get while getting at the harms. Much narrower law than in EU, UK or Aus. The structure of the Commission, now that is where tweaks may be needed. I am looking into it.

With Bill S-210 at Committee, sharing my analysis from earlier this year: shorturl.at/lGQAU. Long and short: age verification is impt, tech evolving, but this Bill is deeply flawed. This all belongs in Bill C-63, where holistic child safety by design approach can be taken.

Highly recommend this CCA report (note I did advise on it, but did not write it). The only report I know that so comprehensively examines the public safety landscape from multidisciplinary perspective. Helps make sense of online harms bill.
