1/ The President’s comments are disgusting. Unleashing the military on this city, protestors, and residents is unacceptable and unnecessary.

This is a manufactured intrusion on local authority. Violent crime in the District is at the lowest rates we’ve seen in 30 years. Federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department is unwarranted because there is no Federal emergency. Full Statement:
This is a manufactured intrusion on local authority. Violent crime in the District is at the lowest rates we’ve seen in 30 years. Federalizing the Metropolitan Police Department is unwarranted because there is no Federal emergency. Further, the National Guard has no public safety training or knowledge of local laws. The Guard’s role does not include investigating or solving crimes in the District. Calling out the National Guard is an unnecessary deployment with no real mission.

Public safety is built on trust, consistent enforcement, and community-based strategies. We must ensure that in our pursuit of safety, we do not create an atmosphere of surveillance, intimidation or unequal treatment under the law.

Our local police department is the best in the country, and it is our police officers who should be leading the efforts to keep our communities safe–not the National Guard. The President was unable to cite any evidence that our MPD is not able to do the job. Let’s stay focused.

Today I, along with several colleagues, asked the Mayor to reverse her decision to drop the city's indoor mask mandate. We are concerned this decision puts our most vulnerable residents at risk. Read the full text here: bit.ly/2YVgXnK (1/2)

The federal charges against Councilmember Trayon White are deeply disturbing. Notwithstanding the principle that a person is innocent until proven guilty, the allegations, together with the government’s affidavit, are a gut punch to the public trust in the Council. (1/2)

Thank you President Trump! I didn’t know that introducing light into my body could save me! 🙄
Wow Trump just suggested getting rid of coronavirus by bringing "light inside the body" ... "either through the skin or in some other way" or using disinfectant: "is there a way you can do something like that by injection or some other way."

Under the bill released by @senatemajldr McConnell, DC is eligible for around $500 million in direct Coronavirus payments while other states, even those smaller than DC, would get at least $1.25 billion. The Senate MUST classify DC as a State for purposes of Coronavirus relief

2/ Peaceful demonstrators want to be heard. Clearing them with horses and teargas is not the American way. Talking about the second amendment, which the president did, while throwing a finger at the first amendment is not what we need.

Today we officially unveil Jamal Khashoggi Way. In October 2018 he entered the Saudi consulate and was brutally murdered by government agents, sparking worldwide outrage. Through his journalism, Jamal Khashoggi was a fierce advocate for democracy, human rights & the rule of law.

The vast majority of the District’s budget is DC taxpayer dollars, not federal funds. District spending comes from locally-generated revenues. This CR does NOT save federal dollars. We are unified in opposition to this continuing resolution language.

3/ People are upset, legitimately upset, about police violence. We’ve seen it over and over. The answer is not hyped up militarization. It's counterproductive, to put it diplomatically. Unbelievable.

Today ALL 13 Councilmembers sent a letter to Senate leadership opposing the efforts to disapprove properly adopted DC laws. We ask them to stand up against any attempts to undermine the autonomy of the District and the democratic rights of DC residents! #HandsOffDC
