"Infection by the new BA.5 variant provides you with immunity for a very short time and that’s why we are seeing so many reinfections. And each time you get reinfected, your chance of getting long COVID increases.
At a time when global cases are rising sharply, the scrapping of mandatory isolation puts Australia at greater risk of more cases and more long COVID @profmiketoole tells ABC Illawarra Drive in a broad interview that starts 1h:6m into today's program abc.net.au/illawarra/prog…

"Each time you get infected, long COVID accumulates, and this is extremely worrying. It means that there is no wall of immunity built by infection against the impacts of infection. So this is all the more reason why we have to be very anti-infection in our strategy.

"Don't think just because you've had one there's no problem in getting a second infection. There's every reason to try to stop getting a second or a third infection and reduce the chances of long COVID. I worry about (long COVID) more than I worry about the acute effects."
