The crazy thing about this is the Kurdish force in Kobani poses zero threats to Turkey. The border is perfectly flat & Turkish tanks (backed by drones) can role over whenever they want. This isn’t about security, it’s about dismantling Kurdish control.

#Syria: in order to prevent an armed conflict with #Turkey and the #SNA, the #SDF has proposed to demilitarize the city of #Kobane, allowing only police and municipal structures to remain.

So what did the PKK win in over 40 years of war? They developed a new, organized, political Kurdish nationalism inside Turkey, forced space for Kurdish politics (even as they sought to control it); in Syria, they led the fight against ISIS & helped build up Rojava.

Israel is starting to speak out more obviously for the Kurds in Syria — good for both of them, but especially for the SDF, which needs international support now more than ever.

I spoke today with my friend @JanLipavsky, the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs. We discussed the events and the situation in Syria. I emphasized the need to ensure the safety of the Kurdish minority in Syria, who are still facing attacks. The Kurds fought bravely against ISIS

Game changer for Kobane — and Turkey. After US ignored/enabled Turkish-backed forces to take Afrin and a strip of northeast Syria in 2018 and 2019, U.S seems to (finally) be taking a stand to protect its ally. Let’s say how Ankara responds.

Just a reminder that when YPG/Kurds secured peaceful takeovers and won territory in 2012 from Assad with only minor skirmishes they were accused of colluding w/the regime. When Jolani does it it’s because regime is weak. Go figure.

5/ As Clausewitz said, "War is merely the continuation of politics by other means." Jolani has flipped this—using politics to prepare for war. Years of diplomacy with historical enemies have paid off. In northern Hama, HTS secured peaceful takeovers and defections.

Salih Muslim devoted his life to Kurdish activism, losing one son in the fight against ISIS. Clearly an amazing moment for him to see this all come together in a Kurdish deal on the future of Kurds in Syria (now all they need is Damascus to agree!). .
