THREAD/ Since 'Columbia Heights' is uh, trending nationally, this seems like a good time to talk about Columbia Heights the neighborhood - its history, and how it's situated in the context of neighborhood change and gentrification in DC

Columbia Heights has a tendency to confound typical frameworks around gentrification. One example in microcosm: from the outside this building right by the metro looks like any other nouveau-yuppie fare - it's actually 100% permanent supportive housing for the formerly homeless.

It's maybe too generous to call Columbia Heights "stably integrated," but unlike many adjacent neighborhoods, every major racial and ethnic group in DC comprises at least 10% of the population there, and none of them constitute a majority. That's far rarer than it should be.

Units are at risk of losing subsidy, and displacement of residents and businesses still occurred. But to put Columbia Heights and, say, Navy Yard in the same sentence does a disservice to that grassroots work & the residents of affordable housing that still very much live there.

Worth mentioning that Columbia Heights is arguably the epicenter of renter organizing right now - at least 2 large active rent strikes there, the Metro plaza hosted a @RentControlDC rally, and Columbia Rd is home to frequent TOPA-organizers of @ledcmetro
First March arrives to Columbia Heights! All these Landlords GOTTA GO!!

If youโ€™re headed to fly out of DCA or drop off and pick anyone up at DCA, I strongly urge you to take metro instead. It is gridlock, and the cars are backed up all the way out onto the parkway. Assume there is no parking at the airport and itโ€™s not moving to get in.

As we wrote in this morning's newsletter: The DCist team's coverage of the DMV is invaluable and essential to knowing this city, and weโ€™re all better off for their workโ€”especially as the local news landscape evaporates. We have especially relied on DCist to do what we do.
This morning, @wamu885 management informed us they are laying off 15 vital people from our organization. These individuals are the lifeblood of our journalism. Our hearts are broken. We canโ€™t believe we are losing our colleagues and friends.

Oh no, how can we go on without DC institutions like [checks notes] the Hard Rock Cafe
Washington, DC is on edge tonight. It took decades to rebuild downtown DC to make it a safe place to earn a living. It took decades to rebuild downtown DC to make it a safe place for millions of Americans to bring their families on vacation. We could lose it so easily.

There's a reason 14th and Irving looks and feels very different than 14th and P. Columbia Heights has a bunch of flipped houses, but also the highest neighborhood concentration of subsidized affordable housing west of the Anacostia. (public.tableau.com/profile/travisโ€ฆ) h/t @allinsea

Though there are definitely 'sectors' of Columbia Heights where different socioeconomic groups tend to cluster, you also see totally gonzo-expensive condos next to public housing. This extends to commerce, too - Bad Saint and IHOP are only 3ish blocks from each other

It's surprisingly irresponsible for DC to have released that "cases by neighborhood" map without the context that: - These neighborhood boundaries are arbitrary and don't contain equal numbers of people - This is basically just a population density map
