Researchers develop a new microLED transfer process based on a dynamically programmable heater transfer head

Researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), led by Prof. Yunda Wang, have developed developed a novel microLED transfer process, based on a dynamically programmable transfer head that uses localized heating to control a polymer's stickiness.

The researchers say that this new tool's ability to selectively handle a diverse range of geometries addresses a critical bottleneck in building complex microsystems. The researchers proved their system could selectively sort and transfer functioning 45-by-25-micrometer microLEDs to form custom layouts without degrading their performance.

Verticle Inc. starts to offer AlGaInP red micro-LED wet etching service

US-based Verticle Inc. has developed "defect-free wet chemical etching", a new process that can be used to etch AlGaInP red microLEDs, with an improved performance and results compared to dry etching. In order to adopt its red micro-LED wet etching technology in micro-LED manufacturing process and expedite micro-LED commercialization, Verticle is now offering wet etching foundry service for microLED developers and display and chip makers.

Sidewall defect penetration depth of the 30x30 mm AlGaInP microLEDs (wet vs dry etching, no prost-etch treatment)

The company says that  its unique defect-free wet etching process can enhance red microLED efficiency by preventing defect generation in the red pixel sidewall, hence, minimizing sidewall defect penetration depth. As a result, effective light emitting area is 3 times bigger than dry etched pixel (see above).

Researchers at the CEA Leti a sub micron microLED perovskite color conversion layer

Researchers at the CEA-Leti institute (a MicroLED Association member institute) developed green and red-emitting thin-film perovskite color conversion layers (CCLs) using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), that can be used in microLED microdisplays.

The researchers say that while QDs provide a good solution for color conversion microLED displays, they suffer from low absorption, which means that require a thicness of 3-10 micron, which is a challnge for very small microLEDs, required for microdisplays.
