Microsoft 365 Copilot is an add‑on. Each user must have:

• A qualifying base Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) licence, and
• A Microsoft 365 Copilot (or Copilot Business) add‑on licence assigned to that same user.

As of February 2026, Microsoft 365 Copilot is priced at USD $30 per user per month and Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is priced at USD $21 per user per month, which is limited to organisations with less than 300 users and requires Microsoft 365 Business licenses to be present.

Microsoft Copilot is a general purpose, free AI assistant intended for individuals. Microsoft Copilot is available in Windows 11, Microsoft Edge, the web (copilot.microsoft.com) and mobile apps. It is designed for personal productivity and general knowledge tasks using information it can find on the web and files you upload directly to it. In simple terms, you could think of it as Copilot for consumers, not business.

By contrast, Microsoft 365 Copilot is a licensed, enterprise AI assistant embedded directly into apps like Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook. It is designed for workplace productivity and is able to reason over all your emails, chats, meetings, documents, and more to help with tasks like generating content, summarising data, and streamlining communication, making daily work more efficient.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (also known as Copilot Chat) is the standalone, conversational chat interface for asking questions and getting answers using information from the web. It is available to all your users with eligible Microsoft 365 licenses. It is also able to process information that you upload to it but does so with full enterprise data protection meaning that your content is not used to train AI models. It offers a safe & secure means to get started with AI without a full paid Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is the fully integrated AI assistant that works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and more to draft documents, analyse data, generate presentations, automate tasks and use your organisational context across Microsoft 365. It offers extended functionality over Copilot Chat and lights up advanced AI features across Microsoft 365 workloads such as SharePoint, Planner, Engage and others.

From a functional perspective they are identical; only the price is different.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is the original enterprise AI assistant available to organisations of all sizes with qualifying Microsoft 365 (or Office 365) licenses.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is specifically designed for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). In practical terms, this means organisations with up to 300 users and deployed licenses of Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, Premium.

Differences come about from the underlying associated licenses for Microsoft 365 deployed in your tenant. For example, with Microsoft 365 E5, you get the full suite of advanced security, governance and compliance controls which, when deployed and configured correctly, enhance your overall deployment of Microsoft 365 Copilot.
