Product & Fit
ImpelPro is a bearing-driven tool that grips flexible-vane impellers and winds them out smoothly, so you avoid prying and damage to the pump housing or shaft. It is a compact puller made for tight spaces. Inboard marine engines only.
-
Standard fits impellers 1‑9/16″ to 2‑9/16″.
-
Large fits 2‑9/16″ to 4‑5/8″.
Measure vane tip-to-tip across the center of the impeller, not the hub. If your impeller is 2-9/16″, we recommend the Standard. How to Measure

ImpelPro's precision bearing system does the work for you. The more you turn, the more it grips. Multiple piercing teeth bite and hold the impeller securely, while the low-profile recessed head fits into tight engine compartments where bulkier tools will not reach. The result is controlled, one-handed impeller removal with a standard 9/16″ socket. See the full feature-by-feature comparison: ImpelPro vs. Other Impeller Removal Tools
We maintain a full compatibility list by brand, including Jabsco, Johnson, Sherwood, and others.View full compatibility by part number and diameter.
Yes. ImpelPro removes rubber impellers from all major brands, as long as the impeller size falls within the tool's range.
No. We offer two sizes to ensure a secure, non-slip grip and safe removal. Using the correct size prevents slippage and damage.
No. ImpelPro is designed for inboard engines, including marine generators.
Usually no. The compact design fits tight spaces, but access varies by engine layout. If access is limited, removing the pump may help.
Shut off the engine and shut off the water to the cooling system by closing the seacock (ball valve).
Marine-grade 316L stainless steel and 356-T6 aluminum alloy (Brinell Hardness 90) for corrosion resistance and strength.
Puller body with thumbscrew, two different sized rods, and a card with a QR code for instructions.
Yes. The design is intended to remove stuck or partially melted impellers without damaging the pump when used as directed.
No. Pliers can shred vanes or harm the pump housing. Use a puller designed for the job.
Using ImpelPro
ImpelPro pullers may look similar to other tools on the market, but they do not work the same way. ImpelPro has a bearing for leverage, and it does the heavy lifting. Lube the threads. Insert the puller arms into the water pump housing, avoiding the cam and centered across the diameter. Engage the teeth with the impeller by hand-tightening the thumbscrew, then use a 9/16″ wrench on the nut to wind the impeller out smoothly. For instructional videos and step-by-step instructions, visit How To Use ImpelPro Impeller Puller.
It can happen. Some impellers are dry, swollen, or bonded in place after months or years of heat and compression, and the teeth may lose their bite on the first attempt. The fix: re-seat the arms, make sure the rod is centered, and apply steady, even pressure again. Watch the video of Eddie
Make sure the arms are fully seated and centered, tighten the thumbscrew by hand until the teeth set, and confirm you are using the right-size tool for your impeller.
Use a 9/16″ wrench or socket on the top nut. Do not use tools on the thumbscrew or arms.
Yes. Step-by-step video and printable PDF instructions are available on our "How to Use" page and via the QR code in your package. How To Use ImpelPro Impeller Puller.
Yes. The tool is designed for onboard use if a pump fails while boating. Turn off the seacock valve before opening the face plate of the water pump.
We recommend every 100 hours or once per year, whichever comes first. Always check your engine manual. See this guide: when to replace boat impeller maintenance guide
Cracked or missing vanes, reduced water flow, or unusual whirring or squealing noises. Your engine may start to overheat. If you put your hand on the pump face plate and it is warm, your impeller has likely failed.
Impellers & Cooling Systems
Often yes. On many inboard engines you only need to remove the pump cover, not the whole pump, to reach the impeller. As long as you can access the pump face plate and seat a puller, the impeller comes out with the pump still mounted. ImpelPro's compact, recessed-head design is built for this, so you can remove the impeller in place in tight spaces. If access is badly blocked, removing the pump first may be easier. Always install a new impeller after removal.
An impeller seizes onto the shaft mostly from heat, age, and corrosion. Months of compression and heat cycling harden the rubber and bond it to the shaft, while salt and corrosion can lock a keyed, splined, or threaded shaft in place. Debris packed between the impeller and housing makes it worse. A puller that applies straight, centered force is the safe way to free a stuck impeller without prying against the housing.
Close the seacock, shut off the engine, and remove the pump cover to expose the impeller. Instead of prying with screwdrivers or pliers, which shred the vanes and score the housing, use an impeller puller that grips the impeller and winds it straight off the shaft. ImpelPro's bearing-driven system backs even a swollen or partly melted impeller out under steady pressure. Install a new impeller once it is out.
At idle the water pump turns slowly, so any restriction in the cooling system shows up first at low RPM. Common causes are a worn or stiff impeller, a blocked raw water intake or sea strainer, a closed seacock, or a stuck thermostat. Check the raw water side first, including the impeller and strainer, since a tired impeller often cannot move enough water at idle even when it seems fine at cruise.
Servicing a marine generator impeller follows the same steps as an engine pump. Shut down the generator, close the seacock, and remove the pump cover to reach the impeller. Remove the old impeller with a correctly sized puller, inspect the housing and wear plate for scoring, clear any debris, then install a new impeller with marine grease. ImpelPro fits flexible-vane impellers on marine generators as well as inboard engines.
