Using Dominoes as a Phonics Activity

Enter the phonics rules and words you want to practice - for example ch / chip, sh / shop, th / math. You can also add Fun Fonix images to create image-to-word or image-to-rule matches.

Students match tiles at the ends of the chain: rule-to-word, word-to-word, word-to-image, or image-to-rule. Every placement requires reading aloud - the rule, the word, or naming the image.

With each turn, students scan the board, read their hand, and verbalize their play - building in multiple rounds of reading and phonics review without it feeling like drill work.

How to Play Dominoes

Players: 2–4 | Tiles per player: 7 for 2 players, 5 for 3–4 players | Remaining tiles: face down as the draw pile (boneyard)

The player with the highest double starts. Players take turns adding a tile that matches one open end of the chain. If no match is possible, draw from the boneyard until you can play. The round ends when a player places all their tiles, or when no moves remain - the player with the fewest pips remaining wins. Play to a target score of 100 or 150 points across multiple rounds.
