The Protector adds another layer of defense with a 3/16″ steel body and a 1/4″ steel door plate, reinforced by a full 10GA door jacket for increased resistance against forced entry. It’s built for those who take their security seriously. Backed by the Fort Knox lifetime warranty, the Protector offers next-level strength you can count on.
Type C Fireboard — is a proprietary gypsum-based board that contains additional reinforcing fibers and special additives. These allow it to withstand higher temperatures for longer periods compared to standard Type X, making it ideal for high fire-rated safes. The additives help the board retain structural integrity and resist shrinkage or crumbling during intense heat, which helps keep the safe’s internal temperature low during a fire.
Thermal Barrier — A dead air gap between the safe’s outer wall and the Type-C fireboard, created by welded anchors. This gap significantly slows down the external transfer of heat into the safe during a fire, improving the safe’s overall fire resistance.
Smoke & Fire Seal — Two seals around the perimeter of the safe door.
Security Plate — The security plate is a solid sheet of steel that spans edge to edge inside the safe door. This full coverage design ensures the door holds its shape under extreme heat, preventing warping that could break the fire seal and let flames in. It creates a resilient barrier that helps keep fire and heat out, protecting your valuables.
Solid Construction — Solid construction, also called unibody construction, means the safe’s body is built from a single sheet of steel formed and welded into shape. This edge-to-edge steel design eliminates weak points found in multi-panel builds, creating a stronger, more rigid structure that resists attacks and holds up better in a fire.

Fort Knox fire ratings are determined through an intense house fire simulation following UL72 standards. Nine thermocouple sensors are placed evenly from top to bottom inside the safe. The test continues until the first sensor reaches 350°F, then the time and external temperature are recorded. Below are the Fort Knox fire ratings
Up to 1,500 degrees in 1 Hour – Spartan
Up to 1,600 degrees in 1.5 Hours – Maverick
Up to 1,700 degrees in 2 Hours – Defender, Protector, Executive, Guardian, Titan, Legend
Up to 1,800 degrees in 2.5 Hours – Home Safe, Upgrade to this rating with the RFL (Reinforced Fire Liner)
Because every vault room is different we are not able to present a fire rating for our Vault Doors, although they do have the same composition as our Protector series.
All exterior, lock, and hardware colors are available on any Fort Knox model
