A day at the beach!

It has been a busy day.

I went to the trailer because it’s the long weekend and I needed some beach time!  Probably more the water time as I find I am soothed by being near the water.

I also managed to get some more writing done on my latest project and as I write it I’m thinking it might end up being a longish short story, a short story or a novella.  I am finding it interesting that in the last six months I have written more than I have in the last three years combined is my best guess but even in all the years I’ve been writing I don’t think I have managed to write this much.  I was putting out a book about every two years, maybe eighteen months and now I have written a novella, a novel, I’m working on this new project plus I have written articles that I have been paid for, I have written a short story and am working on another.

This has been incredible!  I must say that having somewhere between three and four days off out of seven has probably contributed… at least the weeks where I have the four days off.  It gives me a fair bit of extra time to write and focus on those projects.

In some ways I wish I would have planned a camp this summer… in hindsight I wish I would have planned a camp this summer!  It’s good that I feel that way right now… and perhaps, with all the writing I’ve managed to accomplish in the last six months, it will push me forward and maybe I will get back onto the camp bandwagon for next summer!  My biggest issue is WHERE to have it.  I suppose I could do it in my front yard or basement… limit the number of kids to six, borrow the folding table my parents have and put it out on the patio on the good days?

Figure out logistics as we go along…

I wish you all a goodnight… I’m exhausted but it’s a good exhausted… it’s a fresh air, sand-between-my-toes exhausted!

Today was, simply put, HORRIBLE!!  The boss was grumpy, people were demanding and I just wanted to come home and not go back.

I’m sure at least some of you wonder why I stay.  And lately, that keeps crossing my mind too.  And I must say, I’m torn.  The number of patients I like and who brighten my day outweigh those who don’t.  I will never find (despite recent behaviour) a boss and work environment like the one I have.

As far as searching goes, well, I’m ahead of you in that department.  I get plenty of jobs to my inbox daily.  But I’m torn for more reasons than just what I used to have.  For starters, he has talked of selling the practice and the thought of being there for the patients when that happened and being the link to their histories kept me going.  I don’t know when that’s going to happen.  I have also, more recently, been mulling over the idea of moving away to my home-away-from-home, the little town, Goderich in a couple of years.  Do I take on a new job just to move away in a couple of years?

There is much to consider when you make moves like these.  Of the intense questions… will I like it? and what if I’m not happy? top the list.  However I’m not very happy now so I guess that technically strikes the last question.

So I will carry on, for now.  I will keep you post.

On the Halloween front, well, I had a whole five kids go by.  What did I expect?  A lot more than that!  That wasn’t worth racing home, eating a crappy supper,  dressing up as Cinderella only to help my daughter with some of her homework while eating too much candy on the couch!

Well, that’s that.  Halloween done for another year!  Now we move on to Remembrance Day and Christmas.

Oh yeah…

and that wonderful month long write 50,000 words in 30 days challenge calling NaNoWriMo!  I’m looking forward to getting started tomorrow… IF my wrist and shoulder are up to the challenge.  I miss my laptop!

A Little Bit Lost…

On Wednesday night I finished writing Confessions in the Mural, yes, I typed the last of that in on Thursday morning.  But now, I feel a little lost.  I didn’t work on it yesterday and had no time today.

It actually felt really good to feel the way I did when I was getting writing done every day.

I realize that I need a bit of a break before NaNo starts on Tuesday and, if you’re going to participate, taking a similar break isn’t a bad thing.

Had I not got Confessions done this week would I have pushed through?

No doubt about it!  I know I might have lost some quality but getting it done and feeling good about it for the first time since I started writing it way-back-I-don’t-remember-when was really important to me.

Now I can work on a sequel to Mystery in the Attic.  Or another paranormal novel set in my favourite town of Goderich.  I’m sure I could think of something but I also can’t help but wonder about there being a sequel in there.

Unlike Confessions, which started on the heels of The Writing on the Wall, I want to start this sequel now, six years later therefore have a 6-year-old in the story rather than an infant.  It’ll be a bit more fun.

If I can’t figure something out there then I will have to see about a different story.  I want to revisit the paranormal and I really do want to tell another story in my favourite little magical town.  If something occurs to me between now and then I will keep you posted!

If you do plan on doing NaNo… take your time.  Pace yourself.  Even some writing a day is better than none.  It’s 1667 words per day and if, like me, you work, it makes it tougher.  I do my best on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays when I work 9-5 but there’s no excuse for the other days.  Get a jump on as many words as you can because it allows for flaws in your perfect plan.

For example… how many migraines have I had in the last week?  My back has also been more painful.  Being ahead of the count lets you take time off where you might be best to take that break.

Those are my tips and you likely won’t find them in the 5,872.5 blog posts out there that have been written on the topic.  Maybe they would be… I don’t have time to read that many blog posts!

In the aftermath of the full moon…

In the wee hours of Sunday morning it was the full moon.  It was the precursor to my return to the office on Monday and yet another loss for the Jays.  That led to an almost sleepless night… me waking at 3:50 a.m. and being awake until I literally passed out at 11 last night after a Jays win. But I felt good, not fatigued.

What makes us feel good and bad?  Why does it seem that there’s that one tiny little thing?  That one thing can set the mood for the rest of a day or the rest of a week or probably even a year.

Yesterday morning I had the office to myself.  I had intended on taking paper with me but forgot.  I wanted to print more pages for Confessions so I can start compiling the novel as I’m now at page 114.  I printed it anyway and I always double-side my manuscripts.  I have no idea what happened but everything came out so screwed up it took me 40 minutes this afternoon to sort it all out and get the pages numbered.  Basically it worked out so that stacked, the numbers run up then you have to turn the last page over and work backwards.  Oh, except it didn’t print page 112 at all…

So that contributed to my bad day today.  Yesterday, all I did was print it and carry on.  Today I got the bad news!  And, of course, the Jays lost.  They are done.  I won’t get any more baseball games until the Spring Training games, the few that air on TV.

Anyway, I wrote last week that I would put some pictures from my day trip to Goderich up and I didn’t so… here you go!

The water was that amazing blue that morning.  As you can see in the later pictures, the sun went in and so did the blue!  Goderich has a memorial (okay, it has two) for workers injured on the job and the purple flowers were from the garden there.  The other memorial is the LAV that was just parked there on October 1 (one of the reasons I wanted to get up there) in memory of the 162 lives lost and to recognize over 40,000 members of the Armed Forces that went to Afghanistan.  I did go down to the beach but, after the sun went in.  There were white caps and it was fun watching them come ashore.  Lastly, my mom has Holly in her garden!  I did not know this until I was walking back from the beach and saw the red berries.  It’s the leaves that really made me go “that looks like Holly and Ivy” and sure enough, it was!

So that was my road trip.  The first time I’ve ever been to the trailer entirely on my own without anyone around to bug me or pull me here and there.

And it probably explains a lot about why I want to move up there!

The highs & the lows

We all experience highs and lows with life.  If we didn’t we wouldn’t be human.

Today I made a quick decision to do what I had tentatively planned to do a number of weeks ago.  When I was on vacation the last time the one thing I wanted to do was take a day and go up to the trailer.  Well, I hemmed and hawed around and it never happened.

When I booked this week off I wasn’t sure what would happen because my parents always close the trailer on the Thanksgiving long weekend.  I figured I’d go up anyway.  I’d go into town.  Use a bathroom or two there.  I could even go to the trailer park and use the trailer, I just couldn’t turn on the water and use the bathroom.  Then they decided to not close it that weekend but a week later!!  Bonus!!  Worked for me!!

After yesterday I was really down in the dumps.  Finally I just said screw it, I’m going.  And I texted my mom, picked up the key and some boxes and off I went.

I packed up most of the food for her and brought it home because one of her concerns was how she was going to get everything home in one vehicle with my daughter, her stuff, their dog, etc. along.  They have to bring home the TV too so it doesn’t freeze.  This hopefully solved that problem.

I went into town, I went to the beach and I took pictures.  I have been going non-stop since getting home so hopefully I will get them off my camera and can share a few of them tomorrow.

I didn’t get one thing done and that was writing.  But I’m hoping that getting away was enough to boost the inspiration.  To give me something to want to write about again.

A comment yesterday was about giving up on Confessions and starting something fresh.  One of my options on my list by the way.  And I might just do that.  I enjoyed writing the one book I wrote set up in Goderich.  I want to write another one set there.

Maybe now is that chance!  NaNoWriMo is just around the corner… during which time I will likely not be blogging daily, just to give you a heads up!
