About the site

Everything is bad for you (a name that doesn’t have much to do with the subject of this site, or much to do with anything at all) has been running since August of 2013.  The site’s main focus is video/PC games, anime, and related media.

About the author

I’m a licensed attorney, but I still make time to write about games, anime, and music. You have to stay sane somehow, especially in this profession.

I also have several years of experience as a freelance writer in the fields of law, history, and travel, and I’ve produced copy on occasion for small business sites. I continue to freelance on the side because you never know what might happen. I don’t freelance anymore, partly because I get paid better as a lawyer (big surprise there, though I don’t make the kind of “lawyer money” most people think of when they think “lawyer money”, and I really wish I did) and partly because I prefer to keep my writing as an enjoyable hobby rather than making it into work.

EIAQ (extremely infrequently asked questions)

Can I hire you to file a lawsuit/represent me in court?

No. I’m only barred in one state, so odds are I couldn’t help you anyway even if I were able to (which I’m not.) I also want to place a general disclaimer here: I’ll write about law on occasion on the site, but nothing I write constitutes legal advice. If you want that, hire your own attorney. There’s a reason we charge out the ass for our services.

How about making a guest post on my blog?

Depending on the subject matter, sure, I’m open to that. Just send me an email/DM and we’ll talk. I should say upfront that I’m not interested in putting any guest posts on this blog, though. It’s not that I don’t think there are other really good writers out there — in fact, I post links to great articles around the community at the end of every month. I just want to keep all the work here my own, no other reason.

What’s with that stupid rating system you’re using?  Why did you praise [fill in the blank] game/album/whatever and give it a 6?

The short answer is that it’s a score out of 7 that I stole from the IB grading system I grew up with.  The long answer is contained here.  I don’t assign scores anymore, though, so that page is only for works I scored back around 2018/2019 when I was trying that system out and before I decided to go back to a purely qualitative approach.

What’s your policy on commenting?

Generally speaking, I welcome all comments, including corrections if I wrote something grossly or even slightly incorrect. I nitpick stuff myself sometimes, so I’d be a hypocrite if I complained about other people doing the same to me. All I ask is that you try not to be a prick about it. If you are, I’ll still post your comment, but I’ll also think you’re a prick from then on. And so will other readers, probably. So unless you want your prickness on display for the rest of eternity, or at least until humanity comes to an end, think about what you post.

However, if your comment contains slurs or anything I find objectionable or that might get me in shit with search engines, I will delete it. I believe in freedom of speech in public forums (as you’ll see if you read some of my stuff on that subject on the site) but this site is a publicly available private forum, and here I’m a dictator who wields absolute control. Not that it’s much to brag about, having absolute control over a blog. Anyway, if you don’t like that, make your own damn blog. It’s free.

I read a few of your posts, and you seem to be angry and/or depressed.

That’s not a question, but yeah. At times, I use this site to vent. I’m generally not a happy person. If you know a fix to that that doesn’t come with a lot of side effects, please let me know about it (as long as that fix isn’t “Join my religion!” or something like that. If it is, then don’t bother. Not that I have any problem with such solutions — do whatever you need to do to get through the day, but I don’t want to hear about it.)

How can I contact you?

Please feel free to send me an email at sonata_no1 at hotmail dot com if you have any interest in my writing or anything you might want to talk about. You can send me a DM on Twitter @sonata_no1. I still have my Hotmail account, but it’s flooded as all hell with spam and trash and is completely out of hand. If I find a good alternative, I’ll post it here. I certainly understand people not wanting to use the constant oil-fueled garbage trash fire that is Twitter.

If you don’t mind our conversation being public, you can also leave a comment below and I’ll respond. And on the off-chance I’ve misattributed any art I’ve posted here — I always try to either use my own work or attribute properly and as I’m allowed — please send me a note or DM and I’ll fix the mistake as quickly as possible.

    • No problem; I just wanted to put up sites that I thought would be interesting for visitors to link to. I believe I found your blog when I was looking around for stuff about Antarctica. It was just a subject that interested me. Antarctica sure doesn’t have much to do with my own blog, but neither do most of the subject matter of the sites on my blogroll.

I know what you mean about the mystery of the internet, though; sometimes I wonder at some of the search terms I see in my stats folder.

  1. I recently sent you an email with a code for a visual novel.
Just posting a comment here to let you know so it doesn’t get buried under some spam email.

  2. Hi! My name’s Limarc and I’m the owner of Japan Bound. It’s always nice to meet a fellow blog owner.

I’m trying to expand my blog network/collaborations and was wondering if you’d like to partner up and promote each other’s blogs on each other’s websites.

I’m trying to build out this list of media partners I have: https://jpbound.com/partners-affiliates/

All we’d have to do is link to each other’s blog wherever is convenient for you.

Please let me know what you think!

  3. TL;DR: Wanna know your fav story based or indie games, ur goated, sry for the long post

    Heya,

Just read some of your reviews and gotta say I love your writing style as well as some of your content choices; games, medias, and literature (would love to read your book recommendations if it wasn’t for Adhd 😭).

I would love to hear what some of your favorite games are!

Also shat my pants after discovering Urban Myth Dissolution Center after u shout it out on one of your aimless post, didn’t know a game like that existed but the art and style looks like the second coming of Vallhalla. Hookah haze looks goated as well. You also reminded me to continue dead demon destruction (the nihilistic anime with a lot of Ds in the title if u forgot), read few chapters of the manga before anime released. Also vtuber, yuru camp, and other SOL anime fan, also goated disgaea banner.

As for me I’ve been endulging on many story based indie games, especially ones that doesn’t get mentioned a lot. My favs includes Enjoy the Diner, ghostpia, Necrobarista, and gunpoint. Dunno if you’ve played them but they are -in my book- indeed goated. Definitely recommend the first two since I hardly hear people talk about them, the last two felt more popular now but I definitely played it before it was cool.

Yeah, hoping to hear about your favorite story based or indie games, go hard from hidden gems. Also wishing you well and looking forward on your future posts!<3

    • Hi, thanks for the comment and the kind words, hope you enjoy following! You’re reminding me that I have to get to a few of these games myself. I’ve been keeping this site for 12 years, and I’ve fallen off on the posting a lot in the last year thanks to a lot of bullshit and general life changes. Urban Myth Dissolution Center is one I have to look into again for sure, really like that style. I did finally buy Hookah Haze in the latest Steam sale, looking forward to that one.

To answer your question, one of my favorite indie games is VA11 HALL-A (the spelling is too complicated, so I just use Valhalla instead), the first game as far as I know to do the drink-mixing + conversation visual novel thing, and with a far more emotionally affecting story than I expected. I’m happy others are continuing that trend. Also heard of Necrobarista out of that list; my impression was it’s also that kind of game, so I may check it out someday too.

I think most of the other story-based indie games I’ve played are also some variety of VN. Zero Escape wasn’t indie, but they were made by a real auteur designer and they feel that way to me — great series aside from a few issues I had with the last in the trilogy. I’ve also loved some just plain VNs such as Umineko and Saya no Uta. When it comes to indie games these days, though, I tend to go more for short puzzle or roguelike titles that I can play for ten to twenty minutes at a time, since I can barely get more time than that to play a game anymore.

  4. Hey, there, stumbled on your website, read your FAQ, and well if you’re looking for an antidepressant that doesn’t have a lot of side effects and isn’t a religion, Gonna have to say Super Cub was definitely is on to something; consider motorcycling! Changing the way you move through the world, removing some of the barriers and insulating aspects of every day life, learning a new skill with like immediate physical effects on your reality, enticing you to seek out new routes and places, get some sunshine that’s mentally stimulating and physical but not too demanding, plus it’s a great way to meet people with a new common interest and interact more offline if you choose! And if you’re the kind of person who likes gunpla or model building, you might find wrenching on your bike also satisfying (plus for a lot of stuff it’s easier and cheaper than working on a car!) Hope things are looking up for you out there!
