The theme was a one of, there were no updates.
There were updates in the plugins which are all up to date.

I’m wondering if someone can go into the code and correct what you is wrong.
Any thoughts?
I may have to tell the client this is much more than a simple web update and requires a web coder to fine tune the issues

This was a theme we purchased back in 2011 from themeforest.
I took a look at the plugins on wordpress, I see Shadowbox JS, that might be what it is using. There is also a section in the Dashboard menu called PORTFOLIO that contains Portfolio, Add New and Portfolio Categories.
Not sure what you exactly mean by “Can you edit each page displaying each category?” I’d need an example and additional information to help you answer that.
Your guess seems accurate. How do we fix? Is there a way you or someone you know could advise?
