To ensure every individual should have the right-to-die, we focus our efforts on advocacy, global collaboration, and public education.

Promote the right to a dignified death

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies advocates that individuals should be able to choose how and when they die, ensuring peaceful, pain-free, self-determined end of life options

Unite and support “right-to-die” organisations worldwide

The The World Federation of Right to Die Societies links dozens of national groups across more than 30 countries, offering a platform for collaboration, shared resources, and collective advocacy

Inform & educate about assisted dying and end of life choices

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies provides information, research, definitions, and educational resources on assisted dying, euthanasia, and end of life care, aiming to raise awareness and understanding globally.

  • International Conferences
    The World Federation of Right To Die Societies meets every two years to exchange news and views, to elect Directors and Officers of the Federation, and to conduct other business.
  • 1976 – Tokyo – Japan
    First meeting
    The first world gathering in Tokyo at which Dr Tenrei Ota, upon formation of the Japan Euthanasia Society (now the Japan Society for Dying with Dignity), called for an international meeting of existing national right to die societies. .
  • 1978 – San Francisco – United States
    Second meeting
    A second international conference was hosted in San Francisco by the US-based Society for the Right to Die.
  • 1980 – Oxford – United Kingdom
    Third meeting
    In 1980, a third international conference was organized. This was held at Oxford in the United Kingdom. It was hosted by Exit, The Society for the Right to Die with Dignity. At this conference the World Federation of Right to Die Societies was founded and it’s core mission was established.
  • 1980 – 2025 – Global
    Subsequent Meetings
    Since our founding in 1980 the Society has held 22 biennial conferences across the globe.

Our Work in Action

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies key pursue these key initiatives to advance end of life choice worldwide.

Education

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies disseminates current information and educational materials about self-determined end of suffering and life, as well as other end of life issues to interested groups, scholars and individuals on request;

International Collaboration

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies facilitates international conferences on end of life issues to promote cooperation between, and support to, member societies; and to utilize the experience and expertise of professionals already lawfully assisting people to die to foster our global aims

Establishing New Societies

Where requested, The World Federation of Right to Die Societies assists interested groups and individuals to establish Right to Die Societies in countries where such societies do not currently exist;

Advocacy & Activism

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies supports requests for publicity-seeking activities including civil disobedience in the countries of the member societies;

Influencing Legislation

The World Federation of Right to Die Societies links networks of lawyers interested and involved in this area of law with the aim of sharing experiences and expertise from court cases which can be used by member societies in situations of juridical examination to draft new laws or change assisted dying laws.
