It’s hard to believe that our inaugural Nuclear in New Mexico Conference: Fueling the U.S. Nuclear Renaissance has come and gone. It was an incredible two and a half days (Monday, April 20 through Wednesday, April 22), with an amazing mix of people and thoughtful, relevant insights in every single fireside chat, panel discussion, and Q&A. On Day #2 of our inaugural Nuclear in New Mexico: Fueling the U.S. Nuclear Renaissance conference I sat through what must have been one of the best presentations! It seems like I’ve been saying that a lot, but it just goes to show the calibre of the speaker and presenter roster that we’ve lined up. 

Happening Now – The Nuclear in New Mexico Conference The United States (U.S.) is targeting a historic expansion of nuclear energy, potentially tripling or even quadrupling capacity by 2050. This is the U.S. Nuclear Renaissance that we’ve been hearing so

New Mexico is known as the 7th largest uranium-producing district in the world. At its peak, the state produced roughly 40% of all uranium in the United States and still, without further exploration, has the largest resources in the country – approximately 400 million pounds. The U.S. nuclear renaissance needs New Mexico: energy independence in the 1980s was driven in large part by the strength of these New Mexico resources.

New Mexico is home to the most important uranium district in the United States. The Grants Uranium District yielded more uranium than any other state previously for nearly three decades. New Mexico also has the largest identified uranium ore reserves in the country, with over 400 million pounds of uranium remaining in the Grants district.

The United States has a uranium math quandary. We consume approximately 48 million pounds of uranium per year, yet we produce only about 2 million pounds. This means that the United States faces an approximate 96 percent shortfall. Plainly stated, we produce just 4 percent of the uranium we need and rely on imports for the remaining 96 percent.
