Why The Mantis?

Switch Between Three Visualization Modes with Ease

The new VELscope Mantis is named after the mantis shrimp, a creature with one of the most advanced visual systems in nature, capable of detecting ultraviolet, infrared, and polarized light beyond human perception. Inspired by its namesake, the Mantis enhances fluorescence visualization, empowering dental professionals to identify oral abnormalities earlier with exceptional clarity, precision, and depth.

The VELscope system enhances oral exams by using blue light to reveal tissue abnormalities not visible to the naked eye. It’s quick, dye-free, and easily performed during routine dental visits in about two minutes. As an adjunctive tool, it supports, not replaces, the traditional head and neck exam.

Non-Polorized Light

Non-polarized white light visualization is the traditional method for examining tissue, providing a combination of surface reflections that highlight texture and topography, along with color variations that indicate the state of the underlying tissue.

Polorized Light

Polarized white light visualization excels at showing subtle colour tissue changes by improving colour response and eliminating surface reflections than can be distracting and obscure underlying tissue

Fluorescence Light

The new VELscope Mantis builds upon its predecessors by increasing field of view and enhancing filtering for a brighter, improved image with increased yellow/orange spectral content.

Non-Polorized Light

Non-polarized white light is the traditional method used to examine oral tissue. It combines surface reflections with visible color and texture, allowing clinicians to assess surface topography and identify irregularities in tissue structure. This method is particularly useful for evaluating the overall appearance and texture of the mucosa.

Polorized Light

Polarized white light takes visualization a step further by eliminating surface glare, which can obscure important visual details. This advanced method enhances color contrast and highlights subtle changes beneath the tissue surface—improving the clinician’s ability to detect early signs of abnormalities that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Improved Fluorescence Visualization

The Mantis builds upon its predecessors by increasing field of view and enhancing filtering for a brighter, improved image with increased yellow/orange spectral content..

Fluorescence visualization, as used in the new VELscope Mantis, reveals tissue changes beyond what the eye can see with white light. By using safe blue excitation light and advanced filtering, healthy tissue fluoresces in a distinct pattern, while abnormal tissue appears darker due to biochemical and structural changes.

The VELscope Mantis enhances this process with a larger field of view and improved filtering technology—producing a brighter, clearer fluorescence image to support early detection of potentially concerning tissue changes.
