Innovating the Future of Oral Health

At LED Dental, we are driven by a singular mission: to empower dental professionals with cutting-edge technology that improves lives. As the creators of the award-winning VELscope®, we’ve pioneered a revolution in oral cancer screening—bringing clarity, confidence, and early detection to the forefront of clinical care.

Founded as a subsidiary of LED Medical Diagnostics Inc., LED Dental has remained steadfast in its commitment to delivering science-backed, non-invasive diagnostic tools that are easy to use, clinically powerful, and trusted by thousands of practices worldwide. Our flagship device, the VELscope, has become a global standard for enhanced oral tissue visualization, aiding in the early detection of oral cancer and other mucosal abnormalities.

What sets us apart is not just our technology, but our belief in proactive prevention. We work hand-in-hand with dental professionals, educators, and researchers to expand awareness of oral cancer’s growing threat and provide practical tools that elevate the standard of care.

VELscope Core Values: Innovation, Education, Access & Integrity

Innovation – Constantly improving our products to meet the evolving needs of modern dental care.

Education – Equipping providers with the training and confidence to screen more effectively.

Access – Making life-saving technology available to as many patients as possible.

Integrity – Ensuring accuracy, reliability, and clinical value in every product we develop.

With a history rooted in optical imaging expertise and a future aimed at broader diagnostic impact, LED Dental is proud to be a trusted partner in the fight against oral disease.

The VELscope system is a powerful, fluorescence-based device that enhances the visualization of oral mucosal abnormalities such as oral cancer and premalignant dysplasia. Unlike other adjunctive devices used by dentists, the VELscope system does not require any dyes or prolonged testing procedures. In fact, VELscope examinations can be performed in the dentist’s office during routine hygiene exams.

VELscope Advantages

The VELscope Enhanced Oral Assessment System is centered on a handheld scope that is used by clinicians to illuminate oral tissues with blue light and visualize the resulting natural tissue fluorescence.  This fluorescence enhances the traditional oral examination by allowing visualization of abnormal areas that may not have been apparent or even visible to the naked eye.

The VELscope system is an adjunctive device which means it must be used together with and as a supplement to the traditional intra and extraoral head and neck exam. Unlike other adjunctive devices used for oral examinations, the VELscope does not require any dyes or prolonged testing procedures. In fact, a VELscope exam can be performed in the dentist’s office during a routine hygiene exam in about two minutes.

A New Way to Examine for Oral Disease

VELscope technology is changing the way oral mucosal examinations take place. The VELscope handheld device emits a harmless, bright blue light which is used to inspect the mouth and tongue. The device is sensitive to abnormal tissue changes and the distinctive blue-spectrum light causes the soft tissue (oral mucosa) of the mouth to naturally fluoresce. Healthy tissues fluoresce in distinct patterns that may be visibly disrupted when tissue undergoes an abnormal change (which can occur in the oral mucosa for a multitude of reasons) such as when associated with dysplasia or oral cancer.

Supplementing the COE

Dental practices use the VELscope device to supplement the comprehensive oral exam (“COE”, also referred to as an intra and extraoral head and neck exam), and they are rapidly embracing the use of this device to help visualize abnormal oral tissue such as cancerous or pre-cancerous tissues that are sometimes not apparent or even visible to the naked eye. This enhanced examination increases the chance that all suspicious areas are identified so that they can be investigated to establish an appropriate diagnostic or treatment protocol and rule out serious pathology like dysplasia or cancer.

Why Early Discovery Matters?

The statistics are highly suggestive: when discovered early the 5-year relative survival rate for oral cancer patients is about 83%. Unfortunately, most cases of oral cancer are discovered in late stages when the five-year relative survival rate drops to around 40 percent. Using the VELscope in everyday practice facilitates early discovery of abnormalities and increases the chance of a better prognosis for the patient should biopsy confirm the presence of dysplasia or cancer.

Changing Demographics

New research confirms that the risk factors for oral cancer have been expanded to include exposure to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV16), in addition to tobacco use, frequent and/or excessive alcohol consumption, a compromised immune system, and past history of cancer. This changing demographic presents an unprecedented call to action for oral cancer awareness and regular screenings.
