Support Sarasota Counties Families in Need

Nearly 1 in 2 Sarasota Families are Struggling
Sarasota Counties is home to 218,010 households. Yet 93,593 (43%) are ALICE or below— hardworking families who cannot afford the basic cost of living.

ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households represent our neighbors who earn above the Federal Poverty Level but still cannot afford essentials like housing, food, health care, childcare, and transportation.

Who Are Sarasota Counties ALICE Households?

ALICE families are the backbone of Sarasota Counties economy:

  • Waiters and waitresses serving in our local restaurants
  • Hotel and housekeeping staff cleaning rooms and keeping tourism alive
  • Teachers, caregivers, and health aides caring for our children, seniors, and loved ones
  • Construction workers, mechanics, and service providers who keep Sarasota Counties running every day and it doesn’t stop there
65,184 of Sarasota County’s ALICE households are led by seniors over 65, including Baby Boomers, who worked hard all their lives but are now choosing between food, medicine, and safe housing.

Why Your Gift Matters

When you donate to United Way of South Sarasota County, you are standing with:

  • Seniors who built Sarasota Counties and deserve dignity in retirement
  • Working families who keep our schools, restaurants, hospitals, and businesses alive
  • Children who deserve a safe, stable home and a brighter future
  • Communities still rebuilding after Ian, Idalia, Milton, Debby, and Helene hurricanes destroyed 70,000 homes
  • Your gift rebuilds houses, restores stability, and brings Sarasota Counties families home

Financial hardship touches all ages, races, and household types, and recent hurricanes have only deepened the crisis.

In the last several years, storms like Ian, Idalia, Milton, Debby, and Helene damaged more than 70,000 Sarasota Counties homes. Families faced everything from roof leaks and mold to total devastation. For those already struggling paycheck to paycheck, recovery has been overwhelming.

At United Way of South Sarasota County, we’ve been on the ground since day 1 — and we’re still there today. For 2 years and counting, we’ve been:

  • Rebuilding homes from the ground up
  • Making critical repairs so families can live safely again
  • Helping seniors return home after being displaced
  • Restoring hope for children and families whose lives were uprooted
  • This isn’t quick relief work. It’s long-term, neighbor-to-neighbor rebuilding — and it’s far from over
