Alumni
“Ursuline was good to me. We owe her a debt of gratitude. It’s time for us (as he gestured to his classmates) to pay it forward.”
Dear Alumni,
Tradition is synonymous with Ursuline High School. Though many years have passed since you walked the halls at 750 Wick Avenue, shared alumni experiences remain. Our students still stand when an adult enters the room and pray the Memorare at the Shrine. And, while the style has changed over the last 125 years, our students still wear uniforms. Ursuline High School is mindful that our connection to our students does not end at graduation. We make a concerted effort to engage alumni ~ whether by invitations to events such as the Annual Auction or Alumni Golf Outing, the printing of the Alumni Quarterly magazine or by asking them to serve on various committees. These efforts keep our graduates connected with both their Alma Mater and with each other.
The importance of alumni support can never be understated. Their gifts of time and talent enrich our school community. Their generosity of treasure – to the Annual Appeal, Endowment Fund and Capital Projects – provides us with invaluable resources so that Ursuline High School continues to grow and thrive.
Much has changed since 1905 when Mother Vincent O’Connell opened the doors to the Ursuline Academy of the Holy Name of Jesus, a simple day school for girls In the ensuing 120 years, we admitted boys, added a new building while educating students in the Ursuline tradition. We are now 19,000 alumni strong. And we’ve added many new ways to communicate with our graduates: a weekly e-newsletter, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin – vehicles of communication that the Ursuline Sisters could not even have imagined in 1905. While many things have changed, there are many constants ~ our loyal alumni who while giving back are paying it forward. This support for a school that they love will surely keep the Ursuline tradition alive, thriving and a viable option for future generations of young people who right now are simply dreaming about the day when they will be wearing green and gold.
Soli Deo Gloria!

Atty. Tim Matune is a graduate of Saint Christine School. He is the youngest of four siblings to attend Ursuline High School: Michael ’68 (deceased), Paul ’71, and Mary Jane ’73 (deceased). While an Ursuline student, he was a member of the National Honor Society, played football, and was in the senior class play (Bye, Bye Birdie).
Following his Ursuline graduation, Tim enrolled at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he received a Bachelor of Philosophy (Cum Laude) in 1981. He was named Distinguished Undergraduate Scholar in 1978 and 1981. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Interdisciplinary Studies Honors Society. Tim received his Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University School of Law in 1984.
He retired from The Cafaro Company as Senior Vice President/Asset Redevelopment this August after a career that began in 1987.
Tim is an active Ursuline alumnus. He can often be found cheering on the Irish in the stands at games, is a faithful supporter of the Annual Auction Gala and Annual Appeal. During school years when Ursuline embarked on mission trips, both Tim and fellow honoree, David Detec, volunteered their time to notarize documents (free of charge) for students. He has shared his legal expertise with his Alma Mater for a variety of capital campaigns and was an annual presenter at the Sophomore Week Career Day. Tim previously served on the Dean’s Advisory Committee at Miami University, the Board of DIrectors for Lumen Christi Catholic School Board, and as Chairman of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Council.
He served as an assistant basketball coach at both Immaculate Heart of Mary School and Campbell Memorial High School. Tim also volunteered at the Alzheimer’s Assistance and Resource Network.
Tim married the former Joann Marcarello at Saint Rose Church 41 years ago. They are currently members of Saint Christine Parish. They have two daughters, Maggie Matune Damore, class of 2006, and Kelly Matune Kaplan, class of 2008. Four grandchildren complete the family: Julia (Ursuline class of 2029), Alice, Timmy (class of 2041) and Emma.
David and Beth Noga Detec began their Ursuline High School journey during their high school days in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the ensuing sixty years, their contributions as alumni, Ursuline Parents, and dedicated committee members have enriched the school community.
Beth entered Ursuline from Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Austintown. Her parents, Edward and Alice Noga, made sure that their three children received an Ursuline education. Rev. Edward P. Noga ( Ursuline class of 1967), Beth (class of 1970) and John Noga (class of 1982).
While an Ursuline student, Beth was involved in the Irish Show and the senior class play (The Student Prince). She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Youngstown State University while working at the Canfield Sparkle Market. Following graduation, Beth was a long-term substitute teacher at Harding Elementary School on the north side and continued working at Sparkle Market.
Beth was actively involved at St. Rose School ann Parish while her children were in grade school. Her journey back to Ursuline began in 1997 when then-Assistant Principal, Sr. Regina Rogers, OSU, was registering incoming freshmen including Beth’s daughter, Rachel. Beth told Sr. Regina that she would be available to help as a substitute teacher if needed. Sr. Regina replied that there was, instead, a temporary, part-time position in the Alumni Office. And so, what began as a short term proposition, evolved into the “Mama D” era (as Alumni Office monitors affectionately dubbed her).
In the following twenty-five years, Beth worked tirelessly to advance the mission of Ursuline. She was always willing to tackle new projects like the fashion show, and the Girls Gone Shopping pop-up event. Beth helped plan and execute events for the senior class such as “Cook the Cards” breakfast during Mooney Week and the annual picnic to welcome students to the Alumni Association. She continues to serve on the auction committee. At Saint Patrick’s Parish, Beth is a Eucharistic Minister, facilitates the Reverse Raffle and volunteers for the parish bereavement committee. Beth also found time to serve on the Board of Directors for Villa Maria Residential Services. Since retiring from UHS, Beth remains active in events at UHS, her parish and enjoys spending time with her grandson. As a couple, David and Beth are loyal supporters to the Annual Appeal, Auction and to various capital campaigns.
After attending Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph the Provider Schools, Atty. David Detec entered Ursuline from Immaculate Heart of Mary School. His late siblings are also Ursuline alumni: Phillip (class of 1965) and Victor (class of 1966). As an Ursuline student he was a member of Student Council as well as the track and wrestling teams, a Mass server and reader, President of the German Club and served on the yearbook staff. He was in the annual Irish Show and a Yell Raiser.
Upon graduation in 1971, David enrolled at Youngstown State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Cum Laude) in Psychology and Philosophy. David then enrolled at The University of Akron Law School earning his Juris Doctorate degree graduating 2nd in his class in 1980 serving as Articles Editor of the Akron Law Review and was a member of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Team.
David is a member of the American Bar, Ohio State Bar, Trumbull Country Bar, Mahoning County Bar, and Cleveland Bar Associations. He is a Bencher member for the Nathanial R. Jones American Inns of Court and a Board Member for the Western Reserve Port Authority and Flying High, Inc, where he also serves as its President.
He is a past board member for the Villa Maria Residential Services, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of the Mahoning Valley, Trumbull County United Way, the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce, Valley Counseling Service, Volunteer Services Agency, the YSU Alumni Association, and the Penguin Club. David is also a past member of the Board of Trustees and past Secretary for the University of Akron School of Law Alumni Association. David was awarded the Outstanding Mental Health Services Citizen Volunteer Achievement Award by the Trumbull County Board of Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health.
David is a Certified Ohio High School Athletic Association wrestling official, In 2024, he was named the Ohio High School Athletic Association and National Federation of State High School Association Wrestling Official of the Year. For 17 years, he has served as President of the Steel Valley Wrestling Officials Association and 15 years as secretary of the Ohio Wrestling Officials Association earning their highest award, the 2022 Vince Matteucci Wrestling Person-of-the-Year Award. He reorganize the Ohio Youth Wrestling League for children ages 5-12 in the Austintown District and was the sole director for six years. He also founded and coached the Youngstown Parochial Youth Wrestling Club.
He was a presenter at Ursuline’s Sophomore Career Day for 20 consecutive years, and according to our records, has not missed an Alumni Golf Outing in 40 years. He currently serves his Alma Mater as a member of the Ursuline Board of Directors and Alumni Golf Committee.
David and Beth celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this summer. The Detecs have four children ~ Rachel Detec (class of 2001), Leah Detec Ponikvar (class of 2004), Hannah Detec (class of 2005) and Jacob Detec (class of 2008). They reside in Liberty Township. They are members of Saint Patrick Parish in Youngstown.
Endowment Fund, Inc.
A private, Catholic school education at Ursuline is invaluable. The Irish tradition lives on beyond the halls, enduring into the personal and professional lives of past students. This long-lasting tradition isn’t possible without the financial support of Ursuline’s alumni and friends.
