Main Menu

From Undertale Wiki

The Main Menu is the principal screen the player is presented with when starting Undertale. It allows the player to start a new game or continue from their current SAVE file. From the Main Menu, the player can also adjust the game settings or reset their game progress. The Main Menu also varies depending on the game progress.

Overview

Upon opening the game, the player is presented with Undertale's introduction sequence, which details the backstory of the game. The screen transitions to the Undertale title screen, which prompts the player to press Z or Enter on the PC version, or any button on console versions.

After advancing past the title screen, the player is given the following options:

  • Continue: Continue the game at the current SAVE Point.
  • Reset: Reset the game to the beginning.
  • Settings: Configure the game settings.

Above these options is the current SAVE Point description, and the player's gameplay time in minutes and seconds.

Variations

If the protagonist chooses to spare and/or befriend the main bosses, the Main Menu undergoes several changes, with more monsters gradually being added to the screen. Start Menu also gains more instruments. The current variation persists after a Reset, even if the protagonist chooses not to spare certain characters, but it reverts to the initial variant after a True Reset.

These variations are as follows:

Image Requirement Description
Initial state of the Main Menu. Default Initial state. Contains basic instructions on how to play the game.
Main Menu after meeting Flowey. Meet Flowey Features the sunlit patch of grass and the purple Delta Rune arch room, in which Flowey is encountered in the Ruins and post barrier. Flowey is atop the patch of grass.
Main Menu after sparing Toriel. Spare Toriel Flowey is replaced with Toriel sitting in her chair reading a book.
Main Menu after befriending Papyrus. Befriend Papyrus Toriel is now asleep. Papyrus and Sans stand to the right of Toriel.
Main Menu after befriending Undyne. Befriend Undyne Papyrus and Undyne are standing to the right of Toriel, with Undyne standing on top of Papyrus. Sans has relocated to be above the SAVE Point description.
Main Menu after befriending Alphys. Befriend Alphys Undyne and Papyrus remain stacked, but Papyrus is now standing on top of Alphys. Sans has been replaced with an "out to lunch" sign to Toriel's left.
Main Menu in the True Pacifist Route epilogue. Save Asriel. Napstablook, Mettaton, Alphys, Undyne, Papyrus, Toriel, Sans, Asgore, and Monster Kid are lined up in the middle of the room.
Main Menu after seeing the end credits. View the True Pacifist ending credits. The room is completely empty. The Reset option is replaced with True Reset.

Demo variations

The Undertale Demo also includes a few variations of the Main Menu, primarily depending on Toriel's fate after her battle:

Image Requirement Description
Initial state of the Main Menu. Default Initial state. Contains basic instructions on how to play the game.
Main Menu after saving at least once. SAVE at least once Features the sunlit patch of grass and the purple Delta Rune arch room, in which Flowey is encountered in the Ruins and post barrier.
Main Menu after killing Toriel. Kill Toriel Flowey is to the right of the patch of grass.
Main Menu after sparing Toriel. Spare Toriel Toriel is sitting in her chair reading a book, to the left of the patch of grass.
Main Menu after both killing and sparing Toriel. Kill and spare Toriel, requires reloading the SAVE file after performing one action in order to perform the other. Flowey and Toriel are both present at their respective spots.

Creation and development

In a Famitsu Q&A, Toby Fox revealed that typing "BALL" on the title screen using the PC's keyboard causes a short melody to play. The melody is based on the game Panel de Pon[1] and was originally intended to be part of the OST for Item Haver, a project developed by Chess.[2]
